Pittsburgh Jr. Shootout May 14-15, 2016
This weekend the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour ventured into Latrobe, Pennsylvania to play at the prestigious Glengarry Golf Links. The 41-player field experienced a little bit of everything on day one with wind, rain, and even some sunshine sprinkled in during the afternoon. Second day wasn’t much better for weather with high winds and with glimpses of snow. We cannot thank the staff of Glengarry for the condition of the course and the hospitality for the players. The competitors were all playing for junior golf scoreboard rankings. The winner of the 13U girls division received 1 star. The three winners receive an exemption into the 2016 National Championship December 3-4, 2016. Exemption to the 2016 Mid-Season Invitational at Chateau Elan on June 11-13, 2016 is granted to the top 3. Finally, the top 10 finishers received points toward the year-end honors, which include all HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup.
After round one first and second place were separated by a shot with Ryan Dougherty of Wexford, Pennsylvania holding on for victory. Ryan fired a first round one under 69 and a second round 75. He carded a tournament high 7 birdies over the weekend. Second place belonged to Howie Peterson of Weirton, West Virginia. Howie followed his first round even par 70 with a 75. Howie finished his weekend with 6 birdies, including 5 during the first round. Rounding out the top 3 was Otto Voettiner of Haymarket, Virginia. Otto shot a first round 76 and finished one better on Sunday with a 75. Otto played consistent golf over the weekend, which included a birdie on the 18th hole during the second round.
After the first round we had a 3-way tie for first and eventually Gregor Meyer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania pulled away for the win. Gregor shot a first round score of 78 and followed that with a 77 to win by three shots. Gregor made a pair of birdies over the weekend. Coming in second place was Costa Coconis of Somerset, Ohio. Costa had a first round score of 84 and a second round score of 74, which was the best second round of the tournament. He had two under par back nine on day two and made two of his three birdies on the weekend during the second round. Finishing in a tie for second place was Grant Thiele of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania. Grant was in a tie for the lead after round one with a 78 and shot a second round 80. He made one birdie on the weekend coming on the par 4 12th. Boys 11-13
Bach Ngo came out of the gates with a first round 85 and never looked back on his way to victory. Bach followed his 85 with an impressive 77 on the second day. Ngo carded two birdies on the weekend, one coming on the par 5 11th and the other on the par 5 18th. Girls 14-18
Bridget Merten of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania had a two shot lead after Saturday and extended her lead on Saturday for the win. Bridget followed her first round 84 with a 79, which was the best round for any girl this weekend. Bridget birdied the 16th hole for her lone birdie of the weekend. Finishing in second place was Brooke Hilden of Venetia, Pennsylvania. Brooke had a first round score of 86 and a second round score of 87. Brooke birdied the par 3 7th hole during the second round. Rounding out the top three was Kiaira Porter of Monaca, Pennsylvania. Kiaira shot 90 both days and had a birdie on the 18th hole on Sunday.
