Philadelphia Jr Open - May 14-15

Philadelphia Jr. Open Five Ponds GC – Warminster, PA May 14-15

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour travelled to the scenic Five Ponds GC in Warminster, Pennsylvania. The course was ranked by players as the “Best of Bucks County” public golf course for five consecutive years. Built around a series of five ponds, the course takes advantage of the landscape to provides golfers of all skill levels challenges. Rolling architecture, massive greens, elevated tees, and more water than any golfer desires are some of the unique features to Five Ponds. The practice facility includes 3 greens surrounded by 3 bunkers, a long driving range, and a small fairway area. The course rewards accuracy and touch, as some fairways are quite narrow with trees or hazards left or right. Power must be kept in check or the shot will end up a “splash.” Saturday brought a beautiful day for golf and the HJGT was lucky enough to miss out on the storms that came rolling through later in the day. The juniors shot incredibly well all weekend to post some nice scores. Boys 16-18

Ben Pochet

The boys 16-18 age division featured a tight race between Ben Pochet (Royersford, PA) and Charles Young (Woodstock, MD). The race came down to the final stretch as Pochet beat out Young by 2 strokes. Pochet captured the victory with a 145 (+3) total, highlighted by 4 birdies and 25 pars. Pochet had a 2 shot lead entering the final round and maintained that with his putter. Young scpred a 147 (+5) overall, including 6 birdies and 21 pars. Young played consistently and struck the ball well, but couldn’t overcome a 2 stroke deficit from day one. Third came down to a tie between Thomas Bird (Lititz, PA) and Patrick Sheehan (Doylestown, PA), who both shot a 154 (+12) total. Sheehan led the division with 7 birdies while Bird drained 1. Bird, on the other hand, led the division with 25 pars and Sheehan came away with 15. It was really a two-man race to the end after Ryan Keyes (Parsons, PA – 3rd man in final grouping) fell off in the final round. Boys 14-15

Jonathan Lumley

The boys 14-15 age division provided a first ever Hurricane participant and winner in the form of Jonathan Lumley (Royersford, PA). In his first event, Lumley shot a 160 (+18) total, en route to a 7 stroke win over second place finisher, Phil Bancroft III (New Hope, PA). Lumley took a 2 stroke lead after Saturday’s opening round. A couple of birdies and 19 pars led Lumley to the victory over his fellow competitors. Bancroft III (167: +25) played well, but a slight struggle in the opening round proved to be too much to overcome. A pair of birdies and 14 pars drove him up the leaderboard, while a final round of 81 kept him in striking distance. Evan Owan (Germantown, MD) rounded out the top 3 by shooting a 168 (+26) total. Owan also made 2 birdies and came away with 13 pars to keep him close. Shooting an 84 both days allowed him to be in the hunt but, unfortunately, that consistency didn’t provide high enough scores to yield a victory. Girls 14-18

Gabriella Kim

The girls 14-18 age division showcased a race that came down to the 36th hole to determine a winner. Gabriella Kim (Wayne, PA), Karly Brown (Buckingham, PA), and Rosey Li (Belle Mead, NJ) all were in the final grouping and all had a chance to win. Gabriella Kim pulled through by posting 4 birdies during the final round. She totaled 5 birdies in all and 19 pars en route to a 152 (+10) total. Brown posted a 153 (+11) total, after being the only one in the tournament at even par through the first round. One hole crushed Brown’s dreams of first, but still left her fighting her way shot-by-shot back to first. A couple of birdies and 24 pars led her charge. Rosey Li came in third by a mere 2 strokes to first and 1 to second. Li posted a 154 (+12) total, compiling 2 birdies and 23 pars. Li fell short due to one too many double bogeys. She played consistently well, but couldn’t overcome a few holes. Boys 11-13

Isaiah Marseille

The boys 11-13 age division highlighted another close race for first between Isaiah Marseille (Linden, NJ) and John Shangzhi Wang (Wilmington, DE). Wang led by 3 strokes entering Sunday’s final round and actually shot the same, but Marseille was up for the challenge as he took home first. After a poor Saturday, Isaiah came back with a strong final round that led him to a 169 (+27) total, 2 birdies, and 10 pars. Isaiah knew he had to do something different if he wanted to win, and he adjusted quite admirably as he finished with an 81 and another Hurricane victory. Wang kept things interesting as he posted 17 pars, but had no birdies to help him. Kevin Gardner (Dryden, NY) closed out with a top three finish by shooting a 176 (+34) overall. Gardner played consistently, but that wasn’t enough to stay within striking distance. A division-high 3 birdies and 11 pars charged his game.
