The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made a stop at The Shoals Club in Muscle Shoals, AL to host the Northern Alabama Junior Shootout. The weather conditions were ideal for both days of the tournament this week. The tournament saw a lot of close competition in all divisions. All the winners of each division will get an invite to the 2015 HJGT National Championship at Champions Gate.
The Boy’s 15-18 division saw some thrilling golf between all competitors with 5 strokes separating first through seventh place. Cal Templeton from Germantown, TN was able to claim the victory by 1 shot after posting scores of 74, +2 on day one and 78, +6 on day two for a two day total of 152. Templeton started out with an even par front nine on the first day and that consistent play carried him the rest of the way, to edge the competition. Coming in second place this week was Chris Aldmon of Knoxville, TN with a two day total of 153 after posting scores of 75, +3 and 78, +6. Aldmon recorded 13 pars in his first round and was able to sustain his high level of play throughout the tournament to claim second. Coming in third place this week was Eli Freeman of Shelbyville, TN, with a two day total of 155 after shooting scores of 78, +6 and 77, +5. Freeman recorded three consecutive birdies late on his back nine the second day to hold on for third place. In the end Cal Templeton was able to hold off the competition and win the Northern Alabama Junior Shootout at The Shoals. The Boy’s 13-1
4 division was claimed by A. Jacks Green out of Franklin, TN with the help of the lowest score in both rounds coming to a total of 142. Green was able to stay out of too much trouble with a combination of birdies, pars, and bogeys allowing him to gain more momentum as the rounds went on. Ben Lanman from Charleston, IL was able to claim second using the same technique as Sky by coming in with a 73 for the first round and limiting the second round struggle to a second round 79 to finish with a two round total of 152. The biggest determining factors between the first two places was that Green was able to convert on birdie opportunities while Lanman had to settle for pars and bogeys. Lanman was able to convert on some lengthy putts on some really challenging greens that gave him the momentum to close the gap after the first round. Hunter Battles was able to fight off the hard charging Samuel Prater to hold onto third place despite posting a second round score of 81, +9. The slow greens seemed to be an issue for Battles in the second round which lead too much more putting than I’m sure he would have liked. Although there was some more distance between the top three in this age division this was still some of the best golf being played throughout the day.
In the Girls 15-18 division Kelly Stickland from Alpharetta Georgia, let the rest of the fiest by 1, with a two day score of 153. Kelly had her best day on Sunday with a 76, +4 and a 77, +5 on Saturday. Kelly came into Sunday tied for second and was able to hold off the rest of the field just enough to get the win. Brittany Collins, from Muscle Sholes Alabama, finished second with a two day score of 154. Brittany had her best day on Saturday with a 76, +4 and came into Sunday with the lead, but struggled on two holes which ended up determining the tournament. Third place went to Daphne Chang, who had a two day score of 155 with her best score of 77, +5 on Sunday and a score of 78, +6 on Saturday. There were only 3 stokes that separated first through third place, which made the end of Sunday very interesting to watch.
