Northeast Florida Jr. Open, August 18-19, 2012

Ackerman makes it rain

Danford wins with consistency

Orange Park, FL (August 18-19,2012)- The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Orange Park this weekend to host the Northeast Florida Junior Open at the gorgeous Eagle Landing Golf Club.  The tournament featured over 50 of the southeast’s best players, with competitors from Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey.  This tournament was ranked by the Junior Golf Scoreboard.  The weather was not so friendly on the Sunday final round after a gorgeous opening round on Saturday, causing an abrupt ending to the tournament after a torrential downpour of rain.  The result was an 18-hole decision from the opening round on Saturday.  It couldn’t have been more appropriate for the “Hurricane” tour to host a tournament at a course filled with water hazards and prisoner to pouring rain on Sunday.  Nonetheless the tournament had plenty of bright spots despite a cloudy finish.   The Boys 15-18 Division was won by Cole Ackerman of St. Simons Is., GA after shooting an outstanding 66 on Saturday.  Ackerman nearly swept the board after leading the field in eagles (1), birdies (6), most par breakers (38.9%), most pars or better (88.9%), par 4 performance (3.80 avg.) and par 5 performance (4.00).  Sources also report that Ackerman had received a text message from PGA professional Davis Love III, wishing the young stud good luck before his tournament.  Ackerman certainly relished the message and made the most of his weekend.  Claiming second place was U MinnWoon from Jacksonville, FL after a solid 70 – two strokes under par.  Woon finished right on Ackerman’s tail with 5 birdies, on top of a respectable 2.75 par 3 average for the par 3 performance.  Rounding out the group in third from Windermere, FL was Cj Wagner who posted a 71 on Saturday.  Wagner tied Ackerman for eagles with 1 and crafted a solid 4.25 par 5 average on the par 5 performance.   The Girls 15-18 Division was won by Jessica Danford of Longwood, FL posting a strong 74.  Danford’s consistent performance allowed her to tie for second in birdies with 2 and lead the field in most pars or better with 83.3%.  Danford also finished in second in the par 4 (4.00 avg.) and par 5 (5.00 avg.)  performances.  Second place went to Caroline Holloway from Gainesville, Fl after posting a score of 77.  Holloway tied for first in birdies (3) and most par breakers (16.7%).  Finishing in a close third place from Newberry, FL was Gaby Amos after shooting a 78.  Amos managed to lead the field in birdies (3) and most par breakers (16.7%). Josh Lewis, from Lake Mary, FL claimed the first place prize for the Boys 11-14 Division, shooting a decent 71.  Lewis’ stellar performance allowed him to lead the field in birdies (3), par breakers (16.7%), pars or better (88.9%), and par 3 performance (2.75 avg.).  The second place trophy was a tie between Brandon Mancheno of Jacksonville, FL and Kyle Flexsenhar of Lake Mary, FL who each posted reasonable scores of 73.  Mancheno tied for first in birdies (3) and par breakers (16.7%).  Flexsenhar lead the group in par 4 performance with a 3.90 average. The first place trophy for the Girls 11-14 Division was given to Hannah Berman from Jacksonville, FL after shooting a 77.  Berman’s outing allowed her to lead the ladies in birdies (2), par breakers (11.1%), pars (10), par 3 performance (par 3 avg.), par 4 performance (4.20 avg.) and par 5 performance (5.50 avg.).  Coming in second from West Palm Beach, FL was Paige Lee Garris posting an 86.  Haley Danford, younger sister of the older girl division first place winner Jessica, brought another trophy home for the family mantle after finishing in third with a 94 score.   Weather: Saturday: Temperature in the 90’s, sunny and hot Sunday: Afternoon showers, round cancelled after 2 hour delay    Tournament Yardages:
