Milanowski Outlasts Gee to Win in Forsyth

Yang Dominates at Nike Cup Series Event #6

Forsyth, GA (July 27-28) - The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour journeyed to Forsyth, GA for the Nike Cup Series Event #4 hosted by The Club at River Forest.  The Club at River Forest, located just outside of Macon, GA is one of the many great courses in the Canongate family.  The course features natural granite and well thought out bunkers and was designed by course superintendent Gary Wilder.  River Forest opened in 2004 and is a favorite among Canongate members.  Players were able to enjoy the natural beauty of the course as there was no threat of storms either day.  This tournament was ranked by the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS).  Winners of all four divisions receive an automatic bid to the 2013 Tour Championship.  The top ten finishers also received performance points which were awarded to the top 10 finishers in each age division.  These points will go towards end of the year honors including HJGT State teams and the Hurricane Cup.

Boys 15-18 Division: In the older boys division there was an outright battle until the final putt was holed on hole number 36 of the tournament. It was a situation that seemed like the only result would come from a playoff, as both players stood on the tee of the final hole all tied at level par for the tournament. The two competitors Jake Milanowski of Peachtree City, GA and Henry Gee of Hiram, GA were both two under par for the final round and were neck and neck the entire day. With identical starts to the day through ten holes, each player had 7 pars and 3 birdies, which came on holes 3, 4 and 10. Milanowski took the lead as Gee made his first bogey of the day at the par 4, twelfth hole. The lead did not last long as Gee threw in pars on 13 and 14 while Milanowski dropped his first shot of the day at the par 4, fourteenth hole. Again the players went hole for hole as they each made pars on holes 15-17. Both players stood about 150 yards out on the long par 4, eighteenth. Gee held the advantage as his ball sat left center of the fairway and Milanowski was positioned in the fairway bunker to the left. Milanowski, who recently turned 15, is participating in his first event in the 15-18 division. He went on to put his approach shot ten yards short of the green in the fairway. Gee who was next to play made a rare mistake on the day as his second shot missed the green left and found the bunker. The chip shot of Milanowski found its way below the pin about 15 feet from the hole, the door had been open for Gee to pull off the shot of the tournament. When Gee’s bunker shot barely trickled onto the green and settled around 25 feet from the hole it was once again any players’ tournament to win. When Gee rolled his par putt up about 3 feet short and made bogey, it was known that Milanowski would have a putt for the win. From 15 feet out, the putt made its way toward the hole and with perfect speed it hit the back of the hole and fell in. A strong fist pump from Milanowski led to a great start for Jake, earning him a spot into the boys 15-18 Tour Championship already. Not to be overlooked on the day was our third place finisher from McDonough, GA, Brett Ammons. He got off to a strong start finishing the front nine with three birdies in the last four holes to card a 33 before falling off the pace on the back nine. Winning the EFX bracelet for making the most birdies was the young and upcoming star Jake Milanowski who made seven birdies in the tournament. Joe Burnett out of Canton, GA won the Golf Pride grips for our most improved player award; he jumped 11 shots from a first round 94 down to an 83.

Girls 15-18 Division: As the older girls took the course on day two, it looked to be an eventful day in the battle for second place. The three players within three shots for the second place spot were Ashton Maddaloni of Eclectic, AL, Trisha Mukherjee of Marietta, GA and Kolby McWilliams of Tallahassee, FL. In the middle of round two, McWilliams saw her chances of positioning in the tournament come to an end as a tough stretch of golf set her back. Mukherjee made a birdie on number 10 that put her two strokes ahead of Maddaloni, this lasted until the final four holes when Mukherjee suffered a tough finish and Maddaloni prevailed with a finish that boasted her into the second position. Our first place finisher Alissa Yang of Norcross, GA played 36 excellent holes of golf that led her to rounds of 72 and 70 giving her a ten shot lead. She had seven birdies which not only helped lead her to the victory but also gave her the EFX bracelet for making the most birdies in her division. Ashton Maddaloni was the most improved player by moving up 8 shots which not only helped her grab the second place trophy but also the Golf Pride grips.

Boys 11-14 Division: In the younger boys division JonErik Alford from Roswell, GA took home the first place hardware.  He was solid from start to finish and was the tournament’s most consistent player posting rounds of 71 and 70.  With the win today Alford also earned a spot into the boys 11-14 Tour Championship.  The battle for second place in this division came down to the wire.  Going into number 18, Brad Plaziak of Alpharetta, GA held a one stroke lead over Evans Copeland of Columbus, GA.  Evans was able to make birdie and Brad made par resulting in a tie for second place.  In addition to the first place finish JonErik also won the EFX bracelet for most birdies with 6 for the tournament.  Jake Allston of Cohutta, GA took home the Golf Pride grips for most improved player, improving by four strokes between rounds 1 and round 2.

Girls 11-14 Division: Going into Sunday’s final round Marisa Mukherjee, of Marietta, GA, held a comfortable 9 shot lead which proved to be too much of a cushion for her opponents to overcome.  She posted rounds of 80 and 81 on her way to winning the younger girls division.  While Marisa had a strong lead going into the final round the race for second place was very close.  Skylar Thompson, of Buford, GA, began the round in second place with a three shot lead.  However she got off to a rough start on her front nine which ended up costing her in the end.  This made room for Grace Choi, of Buford, GA, and Jayla McRae, of McDough, GA, to battle it out for the second place trophy.  They both entered Sunday’s round tied for third.  When it was all said and done Choi was able to pull out the second place finish thanks in large part to the back-to-back birdies she had on holes 5 and 6.  Jayla could not keep up with Choi but was able to move past Skylar Thompson and held on to her third place standing.  While Skylar was not able to place she did not go home empty handed.  She took home the EFX bracelet for most birdies with 3 over the two rounds.  With her strong second round Choi was also able to take home a set of Golf Pride grips for most improved player by improving her score by 9 shots from day 1 to day 2.
