Alcala dominates Canongate event for HJGT win
Beane sweeps awards at Nike Cup Series Event 3
Sharpsburg, GA (May 18-19) – The Nike Cup Series continued its journey across Georgia’s Canongate courses with its most recent stop at Canongate I in Sharpsburg, Georgia on May 18-19. The course was in great condition despite the rainy forecast for the weekend. Canongate’s greens were soft leading players to go for every pin and resulting in some great scores on the leaderboard. Rain tried its best to hinder the completion of the tournament, but after a two and a half hour rain delay, players were back on the course and the weather cooperated the rest of the day. Players were fighting for a lot at Canongate. Winners of the Girls 15-18 division earned AJGA Performance Stars while winners in every division earned an invite to the 2013 Tour Championship. The event was ranked by National Junior Golf Scoreboard and South Carolina Youth Golf Association points as well as Tarheel Youth Golf Association points were on the line. Lastly, top ten finishers earned points towards the Hurricane Cup as well as end of the year honors.
The Boys 15-18 division was dominated by Douglasville, GA native Carlos Alcala who put a 69 on the board Saturday and followed up with a 70 on Sunday for a two day total of 139 (-5). Alcala led the division in birdies with 11; four more than any of his competitors. Alcala also led in par four and par five performance with a 3.80 and 4.25 respectively. Michael Sheahan of Marietta, GA took home second place with a total of 146 (+2). Sheahan had seven birdies, and was tied for first in par three performance with a 3.00 average. Third place went to Henry Gee of Hiram, GA, who shot 76 and 74 for a total of 150 (+6). Gee had a 3.12 average on par threes and tied for the most pars with 25. Alcala also took home the EFX Birdie Challenge bracelet. Trey Pearson and Nicholas Scott both won Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week after improving their Saturday score by 12 strokes on Sunday.
The Girls 15-18 division saw Megan Beane of Clarksville, TN win for the first time with a score of 155 (+11). Beane had a rough Saturday with an 83, but rebounded tremendously with an even par 72 on Sunday, which also won her the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week. Beane led in par three and par four performance with a 3.25 and a 4.25 average respectively. Beane added to her awards by winning the EFX Birdie Challenge with four birdies. Courtney Lowery of Greenville, GA came just short of Beane with a 156 (+12). Lowery also had a much better Sunday than Saturday, improving her 81 to a 75. Lowery also had a division best 23 pars. Sarah Harrison of Martinez, GA took home another trophy this week with a third place finish, four shots back of Beane at 159 (+15). Harrison finished the weekend with two birdies.
The Boys 11-14 division was where Jake Milanowski shot the best score of the weekend with a total of 138 (-6) to win by seven shots. Milanowski was extremely consistent shooting 69 both days. Milanowski led in birdies with nine, earning him the EFX bracelet. Milanowski also led in par three performance with a 2.75 average as well as par four performance with a 3.85 average. Second place went to Jake Bayer of Lawrenceville, GA who was also consistent shooting 72 and 73 for a total of 145 (+1). Bayer led in par five performance with a 4.75 average. Austin Fulton of Villa Rica, GA placed third with a total of 147 (+3). Fulton led the division in pars with 29. Phil Jones of Alpharetta, GA won the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week with a nine stroke improvement,.
The Girls 11-14 division was won by Ivy Shepherd of Peachtree City, GA. Shepherd shot a 155 (+11) which was twelve shots better than the second place finisher. Shepherd had two birdies, the most in her division, winning her the EFX Birdie Challenge bracelet. Shepherd used the par threes and par fours to her advantage, averaging a quarter of a stroke over par on those holes. Second place went to Jayla McRae of McDonough with a score of 167 (+23). McRae led in par five performance with a 5.25 average. Lara Van Staden of Winter Springs, FL won third place with a two day total of 175 (+31). Van Staden was third in par three performance with a 3.75 average. Ivy Shepherd also won the EFX Birdie Challenge Bracelet with a total of two birdies. Liza Eubanks won the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week after improving her Saturday score by 11 strokes. Golfers who participate on tour will compete in one of four age divisions: Boys 15-18 Division, Boys 11-14 and Girls 15-18 Division and 11-14 Division. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the southeast as well as Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
