Spring Hill, Tennessee: (November 1st, 2015). Arnold Palmer designed King’s Creek Golf Club welcomed the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour this week in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The 6800 par 70 course played extra-long for all the golfers with cool and windy weather on both days. Saturday scores were hindered by gloomy weather that featured cold rain and wind. The golfers did their very best to play the difficult course in the not so great conditions and knew that scoring well on Saturday would go a long way toward placing well in the tournament. The winners in each division received an invitation to the 2015 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour National Championship. Additionally, the top ten finishers in each division received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
Boys 15-18 Franklin, Tennessee’s Michael Shears put on a show at King’s Creek Golf Club, shooting 74 on Saturday to enter the final round with a one shot lead. He followed up his four over 74 with a two over 72 on Sunday to win the tournament by four strokes. The 74 by Shears and 75 by Michael Barnard on Saturday were incredibly impressive scores in the conditions. The average scores were well over 80 on Saturday and Barnard and Shears played very strong, consistent golf. Shears had 2 birdies early on Sunday on holes 3 and 5 to get out to a fast start and separate himself from the field. Ryan Bradshaw and Michael Barnard tied for second with a tournament score of 150.
Boys 13-14 Jaron Leasure fired an eight over 78 on Saturday and took a 6 shot in Sunday’s final round with Hayden Blair in second place. Blair bettered his score by 9 shots on Sunday carding a second round 75, but that would not be enough to catch Leasure. Jaron Leasure of Nashville, Tennessee would shoot another 78 to take the tournament by three shots. Saturday’s round was the key to Leasure’s victory. He was able to manage the poor weather and conditions to separate himself from a field that struggled with the weather. Leasure led the field in birdies with 3 and Riley Grindstaff led the tournament in par 3 scoring with a 3.3 average.
Girls 15-18 Lizzie Loy of Jamestown, Kentucky was the only girl the shoot in the 70’s on Saturday using a 79 to take a 3 shot lead heading into the final round. Then Loy would return Sunday and scorch the course to card a one over 71, which was the best round of the tournament in all age divisions. Loy had a remarkable 5 birdies on Sunday including 4 on the back nine to shoot 33 on the back side of the course. Jacque Crossland finished in 2nd and Emily Lankford came in 3rd for the tournament. Loy led the field in birdies with 6 for the tournament and averaged a 2.9 on the courses par 3s.
Girls 11-14 Sophie Linder and Haley Whitten Rae both carded much better scores on Sunday than on Saturday. Being the final group of both days they got the worst of the weather on Saturday of all the groups. Linder would return from a first round 96 to shoot a second round 81 and win the tournament. Haley had the only birdie of the Nashville Junior Open for the younger girls and Sophie Linder led the field in par 3 scoring with a 3.7 average.
