Solid play for Jones earns him the win
Maddaloni dominates the field
Montgomery, Alabama was the latest stop for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour as they hosted the Montgomery Junior Shootout at Montgomery Country Club on October 12-13. The National Junior Golf Scoreboard (NJGS) ranked the tournament while there was a lot at stake at the event. Winners in all divisions received an invitation to the HJGT’s 2013 Tour Championship and also received a $50 Kikkor Golf gift card. The winners, along with other top 10 finishers will receive points towards year-end honors. Those points will also count towards the 2013 inaugural Hurricane Cup.
Zach Jones from Montgomery, AL came out victorious in the boys 15-18 division after shooting rounds of 71 and 72 over the weekend. Jones led the field in pars with 30 for the weekend and also had the field best performance on par four holes with a 4.1 scoring average. Wells Hooper of Montgomery, AL was four under on his round on Sunday through 14, but stumbled coming in finishing the day one shot back from Jones to take second place. Wells would win the EFX Birdie Challenge with 10 on the weekend. He also had a field best performance on par three holes with a 3.0 scoring average. Cody Maddox of Guin, AL and Nathan Corchis rounded out the leader board finishing tied for third. Maddox made the biggest move on Sunday coming back from a round of 78 on Saturday to shooting even par on Sunday. Corchis had a scoring average of 3.1 on par three holes for the whole weekend.
The champion of the girls 15-18 division was Ashton Maddaloni of Eclectic, AL. Maddaloni, coming into Sunday, had an eight stroke lead over the field and was able to strengthen it by shooting a round of 76 to earn her title. She would also win the EFX Birdie Challenge with 3 birdies for the weekend. She led the field in performance on par three, par four, and par five holes. Sydney Turner of Montgomery, AL finished in second place after improving upon her first round of 92 to finish Sunday with a round of 82. Turner would add 15 pars and one birdie on the weekend. Nicole Latka of Roswell, GA finished in third place after posting rounds of 89 and 86. Latka had 12 pars for the weekend and a 5.1 scoring average on par five holes.
It was a big weekend for the Murphy brothers as Sam and Mac Murphy of Decatur, AL both placed within the top three of the boys 11-14 division. Sam with his 10 birdies on the weekend was able to secure first place after shooting a 69 on Sunday. Sam’s Sunday round was the only below par round of the tournament. Sam had the field best performance on par three holes and par four holes. Finishing in second place was Brett Nelson of Auburn, AL who had five birdies on Sunday to finish the round at 73. He would post 17 pars and 7 birdies for the weekend. Mac Murphy finished in third after shooting a round of 77 on Sunday. Mac also had 16 pars and a field best performance on par five holes.
Brooke Sansom of Pike Road, AL came into Sunday in the lead at five over. She was able to hold off her competition by shooting a round of 73 on the day to win the girls 11-14 division. Sansom was the only player to birdie this weekend, earning her the EFX Birdie Challenge title with three. She would add 22 pars and lead the field in performance on par three, par four, and par five holes. Coming in second place was Julie Baker of Hoover, AL who improved upon her first round of 95 by finishing Sunday with a score of 88. Tayla Whyte of Montgomery, AL finished in third after shooting rounds of 123 on Saturday and 122 on Sunday. Weather: Day 1: Mid 80’s, mostly sunny. Wind 5-10 mph Day 2: Low to Mid 80’s. Mostly sunny.
