Miyagi Battles to Clinch First
Donovan Surges to Take the Championship
FERNANDINA BEACH, Florida (January 15, 2012)- The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour began its 2012 season tour this weekend with the 5th Anniversary Kickoff Tournament at Amelia National golf course. This year tournament sponsors included: Bridgestone Golf, Loudmouth Golf, Living Fuel, and many others. Weather conditions had an adverse effect on players Saturday. With high wind speeds and temperatures in the low 50s, players had to battle to keep up with the pace. Sunday turned out to be a pleasant day for golf with little to no wind and warmer temperatures. As always, the Amelia National golf course proved to be an excellent host over the weekend.
Competition was high. Players were battling. These statements defined the Boys 15-18 division this weekend at Amelia National. Jake Leffew led the field on Saturday posting a score of -1. However, Shun Miyagi of Japan rose above the circumstances to clinch first place. Miyagi’s win was defined by the second round on Sunday, when he came back from a four stroke deficit behind Leffew to take the win. Miyagi shot well during the weekend despite the conditions to finish +2 (75+71=146). Miyagi posted a total of nine birdies throughout the weekend and led the field in the most Par Breakers at 25% and -3 the average score of 4.62 on Par 5’s. Jake Leffew from Vero Beach, FL finished second at +3 (71+76=147). Leffew was on the trail until round two where he posted a total of six bogeys, with three of them coming on the front nine. Leffew led the field in most pars or better with an impressive 80.6%, and posting a total of 24 pars to finish the tournament. Payton Taylor also from Vero Beach, FL finished third in the division at +4 (74+74=148). Taylor finished with a total of five birdies and twenty-three pars to end the weekend. The Girls 15-18 Division saw a great deal of competition as well. Nicollette Donovan from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, finished at + 12 (81+75=156). Donovan improved her score in the second round to -6 from the 81 she shot in the first round. Donovan posted an impressive percentage of pars at 55.6% with 11 of those pars being Par 4’s. Jooeun Bae from Bradenton, FL, finished in second place. Bae posted a score of +20 (83+81=164) for the weekend. Bae placed first in Par 3 Performance with an average score of 3.25. Finishing at third in this division is Kelsey Clements of Sanford, Fl. Clements posted a score of +38 (93+89=182). The Boys 11-14 Division featured seven players led by Martin Jaramillo of Bradenton, Fl. Jaramillo finished first in the division at +16 (79+81=160). Jaramillo posted a total of four birdies and seventeen pars. Jaramillo also posted a scoring percentage of pars at 47.2%. Jaramillo also finished second with the most birdies at 4. Callahan Elzey of Fort Wayne, IN, finished second at +18 (85+77=162). Elzey improved in the second round producing two birdies on holes 12 and 16. Elzey also finished second in the best Par 3 average at 3.38. Meanwhile, third place finished with a tie between Anthony Hunter of Palm Coast, FL, and Michael Mattiace of Jacksonville, Fl. Hunter posted his score at +19 (87+76=163). Mattiace finished the tournament at +19 (83+80=163). In the Girls 11-14 Division, Julianna Collett of Saint Simon’s Island, GA finished first. Collett posted a score of +32 (91+85=176). Collett placed first in Most Birdies with one and she also finished first in Par 3 Performance. Meanwhile, Sutton Rollins of Blackshear GA finished second. Rollins posted a score of +61 (108+97=205). Sutton also placed second in both Par 4 and Par 5 Performance.
