Martinez Shoots -4 to Take First
Hwang’s -3 Clinches Trophy
BRADENTON, Florida (April 29, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour returned to the IMG Academies Golf and Country Club this weekend for the second time this season to host the IMG Country Club Junior Classic. The tournament consisted of over 90 players in competition. Competitors originated from many different parts of the globe to participate this weekend. Countries and states that were represented are as follows: Mexico, Germany, British Columbia, Thailand, Korea, Brazil, Florida, Bahamas, Pennsylvania, China, Canada, Japan, Austria, New York, Illinois, Russia, Slovakia, Texas, and Georgia. Weather on both Saturday and Sunday turned out to be very ideal for some exceptional rounds of golf. Saturday saw sunny skies with highs in the 80’s. Sunday turned out to be warm accompanied with blue skies and sunshine. The HJGT would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the IMG Academies Golf and Country Club for all of their help this weekend. Close competition was seen in the Boys 15-18 Division during tournament play this weekend. Gonzalo Martinez, of Mexico City took home the first place trophy. Martinez posted a two day total score of -4 (71+69=140). Martinez had a total of three birdies in his first round and five in his second round on Sunday. By improving his score two strokes on Sunday, Martinez put himself in the ideal position to win the tournament. Second place was taken by Jakob Van de Flierdt of Neubiberg, Germany. Van de Flierdt posted a two day total score of -2 (73+69=142). Along with the second place trophy Van de Flierdt led the field in multiple categories in his division including: most birdies (9), and par four performance (3.75). It was a close battle for first place this weekend between two of the division’s top players. Stuart McDonald of British Columbia, won third place in the tournament by posting a two day total score of -1 (72+71=143). McDonald had the best par five performance average also at 4.50. In the Girls 15-18 Division, So Young Hwang of Bradenton, Florida, won first place by posting an impressive two day total score of -3 (69+72=141). Hwang has won multiple HJGT tournaments by posting these kinds of scores. Hwang had the most pars or better (88.9%), best par 3 performance (2.88), and the best par four performance average (3.95). Second place was taken by Lisa Unterganschnigg of Austria. Unterganschnigg posted a two day total score of E (66+78=144) and had the most birdies (10), most par breakers (27.8%), and the best par five performance average (4.75). Third place was taken by Ayaka Suziki of Los Angeles, California. Suziki posted a two day total score of +2 (74+72=146). Accompanying her third place trophy, Suziki also had the most pars out of her whole division with a total of 27. The Boys 11-14 Division saw very close play between three players. Abelardo Ruiz of Brazil won first place by posting a two day total score of +6 (71+79=150). Ruiz had two birdies in his first round, but even through his eight stroke increase in his second round he managed to take first. Ruiz had the most pars or better (80.6%), and the most pars (27) out of his division. There was a tie for second place between David Gao and Barry McDonnell both of Bradenton, Florida. Both players managed to post two day total scores of 151 to incorporate the tie. Gao posted first and second round scores of 76 and 75. McDonnell posted scores of 71 and 80. Gao had the best par five performance average (4.75). Play was close between all three of these players this weekend and it brought out the best competition the players could offer. In the Girls 11-14 Division, Blake Yaccino of Bradenton, Florida won first place. Yaccino posted a two day total score of 158 (82+76). Along with her first place trophy, Yaccino led the division in all categories including: most birdies (3), par three performance (2.88), most par breakers (8.3%), par four performance average (4.60), most pars (20), par five performance average (5.38), and the most pars or better (63.9%). Second place was taken by Gabrielle Tomeo of Bradenton, Florida. Tomeo posted a two day total score of 178 (94+84). Coming in at third was Liza Eubanks of Peachtree City, Georgia.
