The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Pawley’s Island, SC on August 15-16 for the Major Championship at True Blue. The weekend’s rounds began right on time at 12:30 PM both days with golfers and caddies eager to take on the challenge of a sandy True Blue Golf Club. True Blue was in fantastic condition, setting the stage for two competitive rounds of junior golf. Trophy winners in all four divisions received automatic qualification to the 2015 HJGT National Championship. Additionally, top finishers in each division received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings, Tarheel Youth Golf Association Points, and South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points were also at stake.
With such a deep field, the Boys 15-18 Division of the Major Championship promised to be very competitive. After one round, Trey Salley of Pawley’s, SC found himself alone at the top of the leaderboard with a host of players looking to challenge his opening 71. Three golfers would do just that. Pawley’s Island’s Ethan Vallery (149) and Lugoff, SC’s Tyler Gray (147) would each shoot 71s to climb into 3rd and 2nd, respectively. Salley would fall into a tie for 3rd place after his final round 78. The division title would be claimed by Jamie Wilson, of Mount Pleasant, SC, would surge in the final round while minimizing his mistakes to shoot a 70 and finish at even par for the tournament. His strong scoring averages of 2.9, 4.2 and 4.7 helped propel him to victory. Congratulations to Jamie Wilson on his HJGT win!
In the Girls 15-18 Division, Pendleton Bogache would take a 6 stroke lead and never look back. The champ from Myrtle Beach would win comfortably after two consistent rounds of 77 and 78. She would sink four birdies and lead the field with scoring averages of 3.3, 4.4, 5.0. Bogache is bound for Georgetown University this fall to play golf for the Hoyas. Bailey Richardson (Gallvants Ferry, SC) and Deanna Confessore (Greenlawn, NY) would tie for second place with two-day totals of 169. Congratulations to Pendleton Bogache on her Major Championship win and we wish her luck at Georgetown!
The best performance of the weekend came from Boys 13-14 Division winner Holden Grigg. The young golfer turned in two stellar rounds of play at True Blue. Grigg shot 68-70 for a total of 6-under at the Major Championship – the lowest 36-hole score from any competitor across all divisions. The Myrtle Beach native sunk 9 birdies over the weekend, but remarked that he could have gone even lower and left a number of putts on the table during his final round. He held excellent scoring averages of 2.9, 3.9, and 4.6 for the tournament. Thomas Hollingsworth (152 – Spartanburg, SC) finished in 2nd place and Cade Hancock (154 – Elizabethtown, NC) took 3rd place. Congratulations to Holden Grigg on his stellar performance at True Blue Golf Club!
