Gfeller emerges victorious

Orlando, FL. (Oct. 6-7)This weekend the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled Orlando, Fl. for the Kikkor Series at Hawks Landing. Over 50 junior golfers entered the field of play coming from Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, as well as Georgia, and internationally from China, Canada, South Korea, Brazil, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, India, and Vietnam. With such a diverse field of play, the competition level remained at high, as all four divisions remained close throughout the entire two days of play. On both days of play, weather remained in the low to miss 80's and was sunny and humid. In the Boy's 15-18 Division, Evan Gfeller, of Howey in the Hills, Florida, emerged victorious. Gfeller, who was playing in his second tournament of the year, shot a 70(-1) both days to finish with a total score of 140(-2). Gfeller started out with a birdie both days, which helped him win the Par 5 Performance Challenge with an average of 4.62. Following close behind Gfeller was Max Rispler of Lake Mary, Florida. Rispler, who remained in contention throughout the tournament, finished only two shots behind the leader with a total score of 142(E), as well as sinking the most par shots (27). Rounding out the top three for this division was Michael Mattiace, of Jacksonville, Florida. Mattiace, who earlier in the year won the Fort Lauderdale Junior Open, finished with a score of 143(+1), and won the Par 4 Performance Challenge. Winning the Boy's 11-14 Division was Anthony Truong of Vietnam. Truong, who attends the Core Golf Academy, came from 7 shots down to dramatically win his division by 1 stroke with a total score of 141(-1). Truong's impressive performance included two eagles which earned him the title of the Par 5 Performance Challenge. Coming in second to Truong was Josh Lewis of Lake Mary, Florida. Lewis, who shot 3 under par his first day of play, ended up with a two day total of 142(+1). Lewis had an impressive streak of three birdies in a row with an overall total of 8 birdies, the most in his division. Finishing third in the Boys 11-14 Division was Graydon Kent of Ponte Verda Beach, Florida. Kent, who won both the Summer Classic at Shingle Creek as well as the Jacksonville Area Golf Association Junior Championship, finished with a total score of 145(+3), and also won the Par 4 Performance Challenge. Macy McRaney, of Winter Garden, Florida won the Girl's 15-18 Division. McRaney, who was in the lead after the first round, held off all of her opponent's on the second day of play earning her the trophy. McRaney, who shot a 152(+10) also won the Par 4 Peformance Challenge with an average of 4.39. Coming in second for the Girl's 15-18 Division was Katie Holt of Clermont, Florida. Holt shot a two day total of 155(+13), and also won the Par 3 Performance Challenge in addition to sinking the most birdies(4). Winning the Par 5 Performance Challenge on top of coming in third for the Girl's 15-18 Division was Maho Hawakaya of Lake Mary, Florida. Hawakaya shot a two day total of 157(+15). In the Girl's 11-14 Division, Luiza Altmann of Kissimmee, Florida came out on top.. Altmann, who was tied with Annie Kim of South Korea after the first day of play, shot an impressive 67 in the second round to win her division. Altmann finished with a score of 140(-2) while Kim finished with a total score of 148(+6). To add to her victory, Altmann won the Par 3, 4 and 5 Performance Challenges in addition to sinking the most pars. Rounding out the top three for the Girl's 11-14 Division was Lucy Hou of Jianshu, China. Hou finished with a total score of 160(+18), and came in second in the Par 4 Performance Challenge. Golfers who participate on tour will compete in one of four age divisions: Boys 15-18 Division, Boys 11-14 and Girls 15-18 Division and 11-14 Division. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the southeast, with stops in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
