The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Richmond, KY on July 16-17 for the Kentucky Summer Classic. Thursday’s round began right on time at 11:30 AM with junior golfers eager to take on the challenge Gibson Bay Golf Club presented. The shotgun start kicked off at 8:00 AM for Friday’s final round, with the competitors taking their second crack at the course. Gibson Bay was prepared meticulously despite recent heavy Kentucky rains, setting the stage for two competitive rounds of junior golf. Trophy winners in both divisions received an invitation to the 2015 HJGT National Championship. Additionally, the top finishers in each division received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup, along with receiving points toward Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings
The Boys 15-18 Division featured excellent competition through the two rounds of the Kentucky Summer Classic. Cooper Collins, of Lexington, KY, came out of the gates firing to claim the first round lead with a 70. However, his competition would be lurking, waiting for him to falter; eight players finished within 5 strokes of Collins’ lead. Mt. Olivet’s Tyler Lippert would be among those within striking distance entering the second round. He used the momentum from his first round 71 to reel in 3 birdies and an eagle for a final round 68. Lippert’s 139 would be good for first place in the field and the best score in the tournament across all divisions. Unfortunately, Collins would falter in the final round and finish in 5th with a 36-hole score of 148. Nicholas Newton (Bowling Green, KY) and Cameron Clark (Louisville, KY) made the most of the second round of play to tie for 2nd place at 144 – even overall. The biggest improvement on the event come from Louisville, KY’s Joseph Allen, who dropped his score from 82 to 72 and claimed 11th place. Congratulations to Tyler Lipper on his victory at the Kentucky Summer Classic!
The Girls 15-18 Division was also very competitive at Gibson Bay. Bailey Hubbard, of Manchester, KY, opened up a two stroke lead to begin the tournament, with her Thursday 76. Blauvelt, NY’s Angela Tocco would go 1-under over her final 10 holes during her first-round 78 to keep the leader in her sights. The pair would duel throughout a final round that saw 3 lead changes. After drawing even after the par-4 13th, Hubbart would close bogey-bogey to finish in second place by 2 strokes with a total score of 157. Tocco (155) would lead the field in par 3 and 5 scoring with 3.2 and 5.2, respectively. The top two girls would each average 4.3 strokes on par fours and both made two birdies on the event.
