Merchant takes home 1st place after exciting finish

Xu wins girl’s 15-18 age division by one shot

Bradenton, FL (January 27, 2013)- The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour spent the past weekend in Bradenton, FL at the exquisite IMG Academy Golf and Country Club for the JWU Series at IMG tournament. This weekend featured perhaps the best weather for any HJGT tournament in this young season. Temperatures started rather cool in the early morning on both days, but ended up hovering in the high 70’s and low 80’s for both days. This tournament was ranked by both the Junior Golf Scoreboard and the prestigious Golfweek Rankings. The winners of the event in both the girl’s and boy’s 15-18 age divisions were rewarded with four performance stars for the AJGA and received an exemption for the 2013 tour championship. Top ten finishers received points towards the all HJGT teams as well as the Hurricane Cup.

The boy’s 15-18 age division was won in exciting fashion by Sameer Merchant. Merchant shot a day two 68 to propel him to an overall three under par for the tournament and the victory. Merchant led the field with 10 birdies and had the highest par-breaker percentage at 27.8%. Merchant was extremely consistent on all holes finishing in the top four on par threes, fours, and fives. Second place went to Kaito Onishi. Onishi was very consistent over the two days shooting a 73-70 for an overall one-under.  Onishi finished second in birdies over the two day tournament with nine. Qi Wen Wong rode an impressive first day 68 for a third place finish. Wong did the majority of his damage on the par fives where he led the field with a 4.50 average.

girls 15-18 winner

The girl’s 15-18 age division was won QingYi Xu. Xu outlasted fellow competitor Oi Lam Michelle Yan by one stroke over the two day event for the victory. Xu shot a 75-71 for an overall two-over for the tournament. Xu did most of her work on par fours where she led the field with a 4.10 average. She also tied for the lead in pars where she finished with a total of 23. Yan was almost as impressive shooting 71-76 for an overall three over par. Yan blew away the field on par fives finishing with a 4.88 average. Almost as impressive was her total of 8 birdies for the tournament. Gianna Tomeo finished in a distant third after posting scores of 79-76 for a plus-11. Tomeo played best on the par threes where she finished with a 3.00 average.

boys 11-14 winner

Teddy Tetak won the boy’s 11-14 age division after posting an extremely impressive second round 71. Tetak finished with an overall one-over for the tournament. Tetak led in several major categories for the tournament including most pars, most pars or better, and best par five average. Qi Ming Wong finished in second with an overall four over par after posting scores of 72-76. Wong tied for the lead in average on par three finishing with a 3.12 average. Brandon Wang and Martin Jaramillo tied for third place with a six-over for the tournament. Jaramillo shot a consistent 73-77 for the tournament and Wang shot an impressive first day 70 before faltering on the second day, shooting an 80.

Holly McCann outlasted her opponents shooting a 77-80 for a 13 over par finish. McCann led in several major categories including most birdies with five and best pars or better percentage with 58.3%. Lara Van Staden beat Gabrielle Tomeo by one stroke to take home second place. Van Staden finished with a plus-23 and Tomeo scored a plus-24. The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2008 with the intention of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Golfers who participate on tour will compete in one of four age divisions: Boys 15-18 Division, Boys 11-14 and Girls 15-18 Division and 11-14 Division. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the southeast as well as Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
