Driving their way through Jekyll Island

    This weekend the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Jekyll Island, Georgia, to take on Jekyll Island Golf Club’s Indian Mound course. The weather was fantastic and the golfers were in good spirits. Thank you to Jekyll Island Golf Club for allowing the HJGT to host this event at their wonderful course. Five age divisions were in play this weekend as Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings were on the line. The top ten finishers in each division will receive points towards the Hurricane Cup. Additionally, the winner of each division will be invited to play in the National Championship held later this year in December.  The top three finishers in the Girls 14-18 division qualified for AJGA PBE Stars.   Boys 16-18 Division

Sarut Vong was the winner of the Boys 16-18 division. Vong was able to keep the trophy close to Jekyll Island at his home town in Saint Simons Island, Georgia. During his first round he shot an amazing 70 and even though his second round score was more at 76, he was still able to capture the title with an overall score of 146 for the weekend. Jeremy Sisson out of Skaneateles, New York was able to solidify second place after finishing with a very close overall score of 148. Sisson tied Vong in the first round, then closed the tournament out with a 78. Only 2 strokes stood between first and second place. Rounding out the top three was Wil Hernandez out of Georgia. After Saturday afternoon Hernandez had great score of 75. He ended the tournament with an overall score of 149. None of the top three contestants shot over 80 for the weekend. The top 3 golfers in this division were all within 3 strokes of each other. During an interview with Vong, he stated he really enjoyed playing the course. These young men showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament and absolutely enjoyed playing against great competition. It was a pleasure to watch all participants this weekend.   Boys 14-15 Division

James Ballato was able to withstand all competitors this weekend and bring the trophy home to Fernandna Beach, Florida. After the first round Ballato had a commanding lead of 4 strokes through 18. Closing the tournament with an overall score of 147 Ballato was able to lead the pack by 7 strokes. Bryan Kim out of Evans, Georgia, finished in sole possession of second place by shooting a 78 in the first round and bettering himself in the second round by 2 stroke with a 76. He finished with an overall of 155. In third place there was a tie between Will Spivey, Douglas GA and Casey Whiting, Jonesborough TN at an overall score of 157. This age group was very competitive, all of the golfers had a great time competing against one another and look forward to competing again in the future and there will be great competition.  Girls 14-18 Division

Hanna Kiefer out of Kronberg, Germany, yet again won another Hurricane Junior Golf Tournament by shooting an outstanding 143 which was the best in the whole tournament by 3 strokes. In the first round she shot even and closing out the tournament she shot 1 under. With a spectacular resume Keifer will continue to bring the best competition out of everyone. Finishing in second was Abbey Schimpf Daniel Island, SC with an overall score of 155 and in third Jessie Dalton out of Vidalia GA scored only 3 strokes more at 158. This division was one of the toughest divisions in the tournament. The competition level was at an all-time high and every girl was extremely happy with their play.  Boys 11-13 Division

Cason Cavalier from Saint Simons Island, Georgia was able to keep the trophy very close to Jekyll Island. Cavalier was on a mission from day one, finishing the day with a score of 79. Day two of the event he would not let up on the competition by scoring an overall total of 157. Wyatt Brackett out of Dalton, Georgia was not far behind after day 2 and finished 2 strokes behind Cavalier at 159 as he bettered his score from round one to round two by 3 strokes. Rounding out the division was Roy Boyd who finished with a total of 175 which was a very competitive score within the division. While speaking with Cavalier he was extremely excited and proud of himself and all his fellow competitors. Each participant throughout the competition showed their love for the game and they will absolutely be back for future tournaments.   Girls U13 Division

Savannah Hylton out of Hilton Head, SC won by a convincing total of 148 by shooting a 72 the first round and closing out the tournament with a 76 and a total of 148. She was phenomenal along with the rest of the girls in the division. Hylton made sure to thank both the Jekyll Island and HJGT staff along with her coaches at the JPGA for a great tournament. Coming in second was Reagan Southerland from Atlanta, GA who shot a terrific 79 in the first round and finished strong with an 83 in the second round and a total of 162. Rounding out the group was McKenzie Mages from Marietta, GA with a total of 169 for the tournament. This group had great sportsmanship and kept a great pace of play. They were on top of their game from the first tee time to the last put of the weekend.  Weather October1-2, 2016:

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2007 with the intent of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18, and now 10 and under, an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Golfers who participate on the tour will compete in one of six age divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Boys U10, Girls 14-18, and Girls U13. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the nation, with stops in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
