Jekyll Island Junior Open

On April 9-10, 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to beautiful Jekyll Island, Ga., to host the Jekyll Island Junior Open at the Pine Lakes course at Jekyll Island Golf Course. The course was in good shape, playing conditions were great, and it was also a great challenge for the weekend of golf. Both Saturday and Sunday we had beautiful weather. Winners in all six age divisions received an invitation to the Tour Championship on Dec. 3-4. Top three in each division also received an invitation to the Druh Belts Mid Season Invitational on June 11-13. The top golfer in the boys 14-18 and girls 14-18 divisions received four AJGA performance stars. Top five in the boys 14-18 division and top three in the girls 14-18 division received one star. Junior Golf Scoreboard ranking was awarded to all divisions with the exception of Boys 10 and under. The weekend was unbeatable all around, and the top ten finishers also received points towards end year honors, which include state teams, all HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
Boys 16-18 Division

In the Boys 16-18 division, JonErik Alford, from Roswell, Ga., took home the first place trophy and was the overall champion of the tournament. Alford finished the weekend off with an impressive 142 two-day total. Saturday, Alford had a round one score of 71 with four birdies. Alford came into day two tied for first and battled fifteen to twenty mile per hour winds and was still able to post a great round. Alford posted another 71, which included one eagle and two birdies, which was good enough to see him earn a four-stroke victory. The eagle came on No. 15 to effectively seal the deal for Alford in a win over 29 other golfers in the division. Second place came down to a tie between Hunter Hester of Peachtree City, Ga., and Ben Pirro of Heathrow, Fla. Hester started the tournament off with a score of 73 in round one with three birdies and consistently scored another 73 on Sunday with two birdies. Pirro had a day one score of 71, with three birdies, and a day two score of 75, with three birdies. This allowed both second place players to finish off the two-day tournament weekend with a solid 146.
Boys 14-15 Division

Carter Pendley[/caption] In the Boys 14-15 age division, Carter Pendley of Dalton, Ga., took home the first place trophy. Pendley finished the weekend off with an impressive 144 two-day total, which would have been good for second place in the division above. On Saturday, Pendley found red figures with a round of two-under-par 70. Pendley posted two more birdies en route to a 74 that resulted in a three stroke victory. In second place was Blake Parkman of Cumming, Ga. Parkman started the tournament slowly with a score of a 77 in round one that featured three birdies, but he quickly turned it around on Sunday by posting a 70, with one eagle and four birdies for his third top three finish on the HJGT this season. Parkman's rally fell just short thanks to four straight pars by Pendley to seal the victory. Ignacio Arcaya of Orlando, Fla., took home third place out of 29 golfers with a two day total of a 148. Arcaya posted two rounds of 74 and carded six birdies overall.
Boys 11-13 Division

Jonathan Griz[/caption] In the Boys 11-13 age division, Jonathan Griz, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., took home the first place trophy. Griz finished the weekend off with an impressive 146 two-day total. On Saturday, Griz scored a 71 with three birdies. Griz followed it up with a 75 that included four birdies, which was good enough to cruise to a 12-stroke victory, his fourth on the HJGT this season. Cason Cavalier of Saint Simons Island, Ga., came in second place with a two-day total of 158. Cavalier started the tournament off with a score of 77 on round one, with one birdie, and posted a round two score on Sunday of an 81, with two birdies. Third place was taken by another Saint Simons Island native, Carson Stroud. Stroud was within three of Griz after a 74 in round one, but could not mount the necessary comeback.
Boys 10U Division

Jack Roberts[/caption] In the Boys 10 and under age division, Jack Roberts of St. Mary's, Ga., took home the first place trophy. Roberts finished the weekend off with an impressive 157 two-day total. On Saturday, Roberts had a round one score of an 82 with two birdies. Roberts improved to post a 75 that allowed for a two-stroke victory, his second on the HJGT in as many tries. Gavin Fleming of Jacksonville, Fla., came in second with a two-day total of 159. Fleming started the tournament off with an 84 in round one, making par on eight holes. Fleming matched Roberts' 75 in round two to nearly match Roberts. The third golfer in the division was Robert Stephens of Saint Simons Island, Ga., who posted a 181 total. Warren had a first day total of an 88, with one birdie, and a second day total of a 93 that featured five pars.
Girls 14-18 Division

Tianyi Zhuang[/caption] In the Girls 14-18 division, Tianyi Zhuang of Windermere, Fla., finished the tournament in the top spot for her first HJGT victory after four top-five finishes. Zhuang came out on Saturday dropping one birdie on her way to a solid round of 74. On Sunday, Zhuang went lower in posting a 72 with four birdies. Zhuang's two-day total was a 146 putting her two strokes in front of second. In second place out of 20 was Kiira Rihijarvi of Rome, Ga., who landed her third top three on the HJGT. Rihijarvi carded seven birdies on the weekend and posted two rounds of 74. Abigail Bolt of Canton, Ga., took home the third place title for her third HJGT top three with a two-day total of a 151. Bolt posted scores of 77 and 74.
Girls 13U Division

Savannah Hylton[/caption] In the Girls 13 and under age division, Savannah Hytlon of Hilton Head, S.C., took home the first place trophy with two impressive rounds. On Saturday, Hylton set the foundation for what would be a very good two day total when she carded a 79. In Round two, Hylton sunk a couple birdies en route to an 81. Finishing in second place out of five was Katie Dzialga of Greenwich, Conn. Dzialga was within striking distance of the lead throughout the tournament thanks to a pair of 81s. Finishing in third place was Josie Arant of Saint Simons Island, Ga. Arant was the round one leader thanks to a 78, but could not hang on after an 85 in round two.
