West wins by two Yan dominates the field
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Oldsmar, FL on February 22-23 for the Hurricane Tour Shop Series at East Lake Woodlands. The weekend had beautiful weather, which kept scores low. Winners from all four age divisions received an invitation to the 2014 Tour Championship and Mid-Season Invitational. The top three finishers and ties in all divisions received an invite to the Hurricane Tour Shop Invitational. The top ten finishers received points towards end of the year honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. The divisions received NJGS rankings as well as Florida Junior Tour Exemptions. Additionally, the Boys 15-18 division champion received four AJGA performance stars while the top five each received one. The Girls 15-18 division winner received four AJGA performance stars and Girls 11-14 division winner received one AJGA performance star.
In the Boys 15-18 division, Kyle West of Litha, FL went low on Saturday firing a 69 and carded a one over 73 on Sunday. His dominance during the first round awarded him the first place trophy. West finished the weekend with a total score of 142 with nine birdies. Brett Beazant of Orlando, FL came in a close second after posting even par both days. Beazant’s consistency over the weekend including his seven birdies allowed him to finish two strokes off the lead to end the weekend at 144. Trevor Grant of Windermere, FL came in third place after an impressive comeback during round two. He improved upon his first round score by eight strokes on Sunday, firing a 69. Grant also recorded an eagle on the par five, 13th hole on Sunday to finish the weekend at 146.
Hiu Lam Vanessa Yan of Bradenton, FL secured first place in the Girls 15-18 division after producing a great second round on Sunday. She fired an impressive 72-68 for the weekend. Yan had a bogey free scorecard during Sunday’s round with four birdies to finish four under par for the day and the weekend. Kelsey Holbert of Lutz, FL finished with an eight over 152, which was good enough for second place. Holbert had a nice stretch of three straight birdies on the front nine during Sunday’s round. Ju Young Park of Jacksonville, FL finished in third place with a 159 for the weekend. Park had birdies on the 12th and 16th hole.
Cody Carroll of Jacksonville, FL came out on top in the Boys 11-14 division after posting scores of 74-72. Carroll made seven birdies over the two-day tournament, which built him a commanding lead. This helped him win the division by seven strokes. Ryder Sutcliffe of Jupiter, FL ended the weekend in second place after consistent rounds of 77 and 76. Sutcliffe shot one under on the front nine during Sunday’s round, giving him hope for a comeback but Carroll was out of reach. Sutcliffe finished the weekend at a respectable 153. Finishing one stroke behind Sutcliffe was Adam Xiao of Manhasset, NY. Xiao started round two in seventh place after a rocky Saturday. He improved by eight strokes during the second round to pass up much of the field. Xiao fired a weekend total of 154 with four birdies to secure third place.
Alyssa Lamoureux of Seminole, FL finished the weekend as champion in the Girls 11-14 division. After a first day front nine of 39 and back nine 38, Lamoureux led the field. Her consistency was the key to victory as she matched her Saturday total on Sunday to finish at 154. Bianca Sol Cruz of Largo, FL earned second place after posting a total score of 166. Cruz finished with a pair of birdies on nine and 18 during Sunday’s round. Georgie Ruffolo of Tampa, FL ended the weekend with a 170 to receive the third place trophy. Ruffolo was extremely consistent firing an 85 both days. Weather: Day 1- Mid 50’s in the morning, low 70’s in the afternoon. Sunny all day Day 2- 80 degrees with sunshine in the afternoon.
