The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made the postseason trip to Sea Island, Georgia for the 1st annual Hurricane Cup. The Sea Island Golf Resort, which offers three 18-hole courses, was rated the 4th best golf resort in the United States. The Seaside Course is home to the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic. The Hurricane Cup was played on the Retreat Course designed by Davis Love III and Mark Love. This postseason tournament was open to the top point scorers from the 2013 season, to comprise eight different teams. The format of the first round of the tournament included 5 pairings from each team. The front nine holes consisted of alternate shot, while the back nine was a two man best ball, taking the best score between partners for each hole. The top 4 out of 5 18-hole scores make up the first round scores. In addition to the players winning Hurricane Cup trophies and the Hurricane Tour Shop Item of the Month for free for the entire 2014 season (12 items), we would also like to recognize parents of players from the winning team by receiving $500 credit for entry towards 2014 HJGT Tournaments. Jonathan Phillips from Hardeeville and Bluffton resident Alec Weary led the way for South Carolina with a 37 on alternate shot play and a 36 on best ball. Their total score of +1/73 was the best total score for the entire field in Hurricane Cup on Day 1. South Carolina’s total score for the day was 308. Team Georgia was led by Jake Milanowski from Peachtree City, GA and Zach Zediker from Gray, GA with a front nine 37 and back nine 38 for a +3/75. The total score for the round for Team Georgia was 309. Team Wildcard surprises the field by rounding out the top three, six strokes off the lead, with a 314. The wildcard team is comprised of players from all over the country. Leading the Wildcard team on Day 1 was the co-ed pairing of Anna Buchanan from Athens, GA and Ben Ramsey from Bluefield, Virginia who shot a 38 on both the front and back nine for a total of +4/76. Orlando residents, Shanren Brienen and Zach Hoskins, paced Team Florida into 4th place with a 40 on alternate shot and improved to a 36 on best ball for a total of +4/76. Florida is 9 strokes off the lead with a total of 317. North Carolina’s top pairing was Dustin Blank from Elon and Charlotte resident, Sam McGee. They scored a +6/78 on the day, shooting a 42 on alternate shot play and a 36 throughout best ball to put North Carolina 15 strokes off the lead going into the final round at 323. Leading Team Alabama was the pairing of Julie Baker and Carson McKie from Hoover by shooting +4 on the front nine and +3 on the back. Team Alabama goes into the final round 20 strokes off the lead with 328 total strokes. Going into the final round in 7th place is Team Kentucky. They are 24 strokes off the lead with 332 strokes. Team Kentucky was led by Mackenzie Peyton from New Castle and D.J. Vogt from Louisville with a 43 on alternate shot and 37 on the back side. And rounding out the field 27 strokes off the lead is Team Midwest. They are comprised of players from Tennessee and Ohio. Cooper Sears from Old Hickory, TN and Logan Stewart out of Crossville, TN shot an impressive 37-38 for a total of +3/75, which was tied for the 2nd best score on Saturday afternoon. Tomorrow’s format will go back to the traditional 18-hole singles play.
