Taylor finishes in the red

Yi comes from behind

Bluffton, SC (May 20, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the HJ Glove Open this weekend at Crescent Pointe Golf Club in Bluffton, SC. Players came from all around the Southeastern part of the United States. The Carolina’s were well represented. Other states represented this weekend included Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey. There was also a very good international showing as there were players from Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Nigeria. Besides a rain shower that came through early on Sunday morning the weather made for perfect conditions. Temperatures were in the 70’s and topped out in the 80’s in the afternoon with the sun present for a majority of the tournament. The Boys 15-18 Division first place trophy was captured by Payton Taylor from Vero Beach, FL. Taylor turned in a two day total of 139 (70 + 69), finishing at 3 under par. Payton was one of three players to finish under par on day one but was the only one who finished under par for the tournament. Taylor led the field in birdies with a total of 7 (3 on day 1, 4 on day 2). Taylor was able to guide his way around the tough back nine at Crescent Pointe to finish 1 under on those holes.  Taylor did most of his damage on the front nine as he shot back to back 34’s. Taylor was also able to play both the par 3’s and par 5’s under par (2.80 and 4.88 respectively). Taylor didn’t do much worse on the par 4’s as he finished with an average of 4.0. There was a tie for second place between Toks Pedro of Bowie, MD and Sharp Turner of Sumter, SC. Both posted a final score of (147), finishing 8 strokes back at 5 over. Pedro stayed relatively consistent as he posted a 74 and a 73. Turner was tied for the lead after the first round and was not able to hold on as he shot a 77 after his 70 on day 1 to fall into a tie for second. In the Girls 15-18 Division first place honors was taken home by Eunice Yi of Evans, GA. Yi posted a two day total of 152 (80 + 72) to finish 10 over par. Yi led the field in Pars as well as most pars or better with 66.7%. After sitting in third place after day 1 Yi came out strong opening up with 6 pars. When YI did have problems she kept them to a minimum as she only had one score greater than a bogey, which came on the 9th. Yi turned that around by birdieing that hole on day 2. Coming in second place at the HJ Glove Junior Open was Anita Uwadia of Lagos, Nigeria. Uwadia posted a total score of 155 (79 + 76) over the two days to finish at 13 over par. Uwadia was tied for the lead for most birdies with 4. Uwadia also led the field in Par 5 performance with a 5.38 scoring average. Taking home the third place trophy for the Girls 15-18 Division was Kaeli Jones of Sumterville, FL. Jones carded a combined score of 160 (83 + 77) to finish 18 over. Taking home the top honors in the Boys 11-14 Division was Hunter Dunagan of Martinez, GA. Dunagan finished 3 over par with a total two day score of 145 (72 + 73). Dunagan led the field in most pars or better at 88.9%. That stat was not surprising after he turned in an astonishing 16 straight pars during round two. Dunagan also led his age division in Par 4 and Par 5 performance.  Dunagan now takes a commanding lead in the Boys 11-14 points chase. Finishing 5 strokes behind Dunagan was Zak Butt who posted a 150 (74 +76). One stroke behind Butt was Kyle Spencer, who turned in a 75 and a 76 respectively for a total of 151 for the tournament.
