Bolton and Durkin hang on for the win
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Hialeah, Florida on February 8-9 for the GCJGF Junior Classic present by InstaGolf. Playing 36 holes at the Country Club of Miami over two days, a champion was crowned in each of our four age divisions: Boys and Girls 15-18 and Boys and Girls 11-14. Winners in all four divisions received an invitation to the 2014 Mid-Season Championship and 2014 Tour Championship. The top ten finishers received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup. Additionally, all divisions were ranked by the NJGS.
Patrick Bolton of Miami Springs, FL took the first round lead in the Boys 15–18 division and never looked back. He started off hot Sunday morning posting a score of 39 on the front nine to maintain his lead heading into the back nine. A birdie on the eighth hole was key in his road to victory. Bolton held off a late charge from the field to finish the weekend at 161. Finishing in a tie for second place was Noah Moss of Rockville, MD and Eric Meng of Bradenton, FL. Moss fired a division low, 78, on Sunday with two birdies. Meng was consistent on the course scoring an 83 on Saturday and an 80 on Sunday. Moss and Meng finished the weekend at 163.
In the Girls 15-18 division Julia Durkin of Miramar, FL led from the beginning. She scored a division low, 76 on Saturday and followed it up by posting an 80 on Sunday. Durkin had three birdies on the weekend to finish at 156. Michelle Rodriguez of Miami, Florida tried to catch Durkin, but came up just short to finish in second place at 159. Rodriguez fired an 82 on Saturday and improved upon that on Sunday by posting a score of 77 including four birdies on the day. Finishing in third place was Adrianna Elliott of Sunrise, FL. She scored an 86 on Saturday and bettered it on Sunday with two birdies to end the event with a 78.
Dominating the Boys 11-14 division was Julius Boros III of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He fired a 76 on day one and on day two posted a score of 79. Boros finished with a total of 155 for the weekend with four birdies. Having a consistent weekend was Ryder Sutcliffe of Jupiter, Florida. He posted scores of 80 and 79 to finish in second place. Sutcliffe had 23 pars in the event for a weekend total of 159. Finishing one stroke behind Sutcliffe was Carter Dalili of Vero Beach, FL. He fired a 79 and 81 on the weekend including one birdie to lock in third place.
Brooke Benedetto of Davie, FL won the Girls 11-14 division easily as the only other competitor in her group withdrew. Benedetto vastly improved on her round one score of 90, by firing a 75, which gave her a total of 165 for the tournament.
