BRADENTON, Florida (January 29, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the IMG Academies Jr. Open for its 4th consecutive weekend tournament in the 2012 season. The tournament was held at the IMG Academies Golf and Country Club. The tournament consisted of over 90 players in competition. This has been the largest of the 2012 season up to this point. Weather on both Saturday and Sunday proved to be quite pleasant for golfers and spectators. Saturday saw mostly sunny skies with significant wind gusts in the afternoon. Sunday turned out to be exceptionally warm accompanied with blue skies and sunshine. Although rained had moved through most of the area on Friday, the IMG Academies Golf and Country Club course played favorably to the competitors, and was an enjoyable event for all spectators. Close competition and great play accompanied the Boys 15-18 Division during tournament play this weekend. The contention was between Rigel Fernandes of Mangalore, India, and Jose Montano of Bradenton, Florida. Both players played phenomenal rounds on Saturday and Sunday. Fernandes posted a two day total score of + 1 (72+73=145). Montano also posted the same scores for his two day total. Montano ended the weekend at +1 (73+72). Fernandes had one birdie on Sunday while Montano managed to tie the score with help of three birdies. At the end of round two, both players were deadlocked at a score of +1. The winner would be determined by a playoff hole. Both players managed to par hole five. With both of the players still in contention for first place, another playoff hole was in sight. This hole turned out to be the test through which only one player would conquer. That player was Rigel Fernandes. Fernandes managed to birdie hole 11 while Montano finished the hole at par. Fernandes led the field in multiple categories including: most eagles (1), most pars or better (86.1%), and best par 5 performance (4.62 average). Montano managed to finish the weekend with six birdies with three of those coming in each round. Coming in at third not far behind the leaders was Oliver Vaidis of Bradenton, Florida. Vaidis posted a two day total score of +2 (74+72=146). Vaidis had a good weekend performance leading the field in most birdies, with a total of seven. He also had the most par breakers and the best par 4 performance with an average of 3.90 The Girls 15-18 Division also saw close play during the weekend. The winner of the division was Silvia Garces of Bradenton, Florida. Garces posted a two day total score of (72+78=150). Garces led most of the weekend with little to no attest. She finished the weekend with a total of 3 birdies and 25 pars. Garces turned out to be a strong leader in the field taking home the best averages in the par 3 (2.88) and par 4 performance (4.25) categories. Second place was clinched by So Hwang of Bradenton, Florida. Hwang posted a two day total score of (76+76=152). Hwang to home an impressive total of most birdies with eight. Coming in at third place was Ayaka Suziki of Los Angeles, California. Suziki posted a two day total score of (78+77=155). Accompanying her third place finish, Suziki also took home the best par 5 performance with the best average of 5.00 In the Boys 11-14 Division, one player stood above the rest as seen by his play this weekend. Martin Jaramillo of Bradenton, Florida took first place posting a two day total score of (72+75=149). Jaramillo led the field all weekend with no contest. Along with the first place trophy, Jaramillo also had the most birdies with a total of eight and the best averages in par 4 (4.25) and par 5 performances (4.50). Second place was taken by Guillo Cortina of Mexico. Cortina posted a two day total score of (80+72=152). Cortina improved his play drastically by taking away 8 strokes from his previous score from Saturday. There was a tie for third place between Brett Beazant and Charles Sun both of Bradenton, Florida. Beazant posted a two day total score of (80+73=154), while Sun posted a two day total score of (78+75=153). Sun completed a total of six birdies throughout the weekend. Beazant recorded an impressive eagle. Beazant was the only player in his division to accomplish this feat. Two sisters took first and second place in the Girls 11-14 Division. Vanessa Yan of Hong Kong, placed first with a two day total score of (74+78=152). Vanessa finished only one stroke better in front of her sister. Michelle Yan, also of Hong Kong, finished second with a two day total score of (76+77=153). Michelle Yan had a total of five birdies for the weekend and finished first in the best par 4 performance category. Vanessa Yan led many categories throughout the weekend including most pars, best par 5 performance, and best par 3 performance. Third place was taken by young Gabrielle Tomeo of Bradenton, Florida.
