Ferguson Wins in Four Player Playoff

Hirai’s 1st Round Score Propels Win

Hilton Head, SC (March 25, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Hilton Head Junior Shootout at the Wexford Golf Club. The tournament consisted of over 80 players in competition. Players came from all over to compete in this weekend’s tournament. States and countries that were represented in the tournament were Scotland, Mexico, New York, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Bermuda, Florida, Canada, New Jersey, Tennessee, Italy, Connecticut,  Nigeria, Illinois, Chile, and Japan. Thunderstorms shortened play on Saturday with widespread, heavy rain and lightning. Players came back out onto the course to finish most of their playing holes Saturday afternoon. Weather Sunday was much better with sunny skies and breezy conditions. The greens at the Wexford Golf Club proved to be a great challenge to players with its firm, and undulated greens. The HJGT would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the Wexford Golf Club and the volunteers that helped to make the Hilton Head Junior Shootout a successful tournament weekend.   The Boys 15-18 Division winner was decided by a two hole playoff between four of the weekend’s top competitors. The playoff group included Ewen Ferguson of Scotland, Gonzalo Martinez, of Mexico City, Matthew Smith of New York, and Jordan Batchelor of Florida. Ewen Ferguson won the two hole playoff by posting a birdie on hole 11. Ferguson posted a two day total score of 155 (76+79). This is Ferguson’s second tournament win of the 2012 HJGT season. Ferguson posted two birdies in his first round on Saturday. Ferguson had the most pars with a total of 23, and had the most pars or better with an average of 69.4%. There was a three way tie between Gonzalo Martinez, Matthew Smith, and Jordan Batchelor. Martinez posted a two day total score of 155 (78+77). Martinez had the best Par 4 Performance average at 4.10. Smith posted a two day total score of 155 (76+79). Batchelor also posted a two day total score of 155 (76+79). Batchelor had the most birdies this weekend with a total of five. Tough weather conditions and challenging course attributes brought out some of the best competition that the HJGT has seen all season.  The Girls 15-18 Division also saw great play during the weekend. The winner of the division was Reona Hirai of Summerville, SC. Hirai’s lowest first round score out of the division on Saturday helped propel her to her first place win. Hirai posted a two day total score of 162 (79+83). Hirai was a strong leader in the field taking home the best averages in the par 3 (3.38) and par 4 performance (4.40) categories, and the most pars with a total of 22. Second place was won by Isidora Quevedo of Chile. Quevedo posted a two day total score of (81+89=170). Quevedo had an impressive birdie on a challenging par 4 hole in her second round on Sunday. Coming in at third place was Kasidy Beckel of Bluffton, SC. Beckel posted a two day total score of (83+88=171). Accompanying her third place finish, Beckel had a total of 16 pars and a par 4 performance average of 4.75. The Boys 11-14 Division winner was decided by close play between two exceptional players. Zak Butt of Summerville, SC, took first place posting a two day total score of (80+77=157). Along with the first place trophy, Butt also had the most birdies with a total of five. Second place was taken by Will Miles of Hilton Head, SC. Miles posted a two day total score of (77+81=158). Miles had a single birdie in his second round on the par 4 hole number 9, and he also took home the best par 4 performance average (4.25). Third place was won by Alec Weary of Bluffton, SC.  Weary posted a two day total score of (81+78=159). Weary had the most pars with a total of 22. The Girls 11-14 Division first place trophy was won by Emilie Paltrinieri of Casier, Italy. Paltrinieri posted a two day total score of (82+87=169). Emilie had the best Par 4 Performance Average (4.60), and took home the most pars with a total of 18. Anita Uwadia of Nigeria, finished second with a two day total score of (88+84=173). Uwadia had the most birdies in her division with a total of two. Third place was taken by Abby Burditt of St. Augustine, Florida. Burditt posted a two day total score of (86+91=177).
