Ferguson Prevails in Playoff to Pick up First Career HJGT Win

Bohmer's Opening Round 67 Propels Her to Victory

Fleming Island, Florida (February 20, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour was in Fleming Island, FL this weekend for the 54 Hole Challenge at Fleming Island. The tournament was held at Fleming Island Golf Course. This event was the first 54 hole tournament of the 2012 HJGT season. Players came from many states and even countries to compete this weekend. The following countries and states were represented this weekend including: Scotland, India, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Chile, Nigeria, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, New York, North Carolina, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Wisconsin, and South Carolina. The weather for the three day tournament turned out to be very challenging. Saturday came with cloudy skies and rain. Sunday turned out to be cloudy also with wind gusts in upwards of 30 mph. Monday was cold with temperatures in the low 50’s .The HJGT would like to extend a special thank you to the Fleming Island golf course for hosting the 54 Hole Challenge. For the second weekend in a row, the winner of the Boys 15-18 Division was decided in a single playoff hole. The winner of the hole was Ewen Ferguson of Scotland. Ferguson battled over the entire three day tournament to put himself in a comfortable position to be in contention to win. Ferguson posted a three day total score of +1 (73+71+70=214). In Ferguson’s first round of play he managed to par every hole except for four holes; three of which he bogied and one he birdied. In his second round, he managed to improve his score by shaving off two strokes. Ferguson managed to birdie hole 16 which was a very challenging par 5 hole in itself, along with the strong wind gusts that day. In his third round, Ferguson managed to improve yet another stroke to finish the day at -1.  Ferguson posted a total of seven birdies for the tournament. Coming in at second was Toks Pedro of Bowie, Maryland. Pedro was in contention for the win over the entire tournament until Ferguson birdied the playoff hole to take the win. Pedro posted a three day total score of +1 (70+73+71=214). In the first round of play, Pedro managed to birdie 16,17, and 18 to finish strong at -1. In round two, Pedro pared every hole except for 1 and 16 to finish at +2. Pedro gained those two strokes back in the third round and managed to find himself in a playoff against Ewen Ferguson. Pedro posted a total of eight birdies for the weekend along with 37 pars. There was a tie for 3rd place between Rigel Fernandes of Mangalore, India and Luis Medina of Howey in the Hills, Fl. Fernandes posted a three day total score of +2 (69+75+71=215). Fernandes posted an impressive score of 69 in his first round to put him in contention for first place. Sunday was difficult for the entire field due to strong winds. Fernandes managed to shoot +4 on Sunday. Fernandes competed well all weekend. Medina posted a three day total score of +2 (68+72+75= 215). Medina managed to fire the lowest score in the first round with an impressive 68. From the second round forward he gained strokes which took him out of contention for the win. It was a close race in the division this weekend between these players. Excellent play was present this weekend in the Girls 15-18 Division. First place was taken by Anna Sophia Bohmer of Howey in the Hills, Fl. Bohmer finished the tournament at even par (67+74+72=213). Bohmer managed to pull off a first round 67, which ultimately helped boost her to first place. In the first round, Bohmer made a total of four birdies. Bohmer also finished first in other categories: most birdies with a total of eight, best par 5 performance average (4.92), best par 3 performance average (2.93), and had the most pars or better (87%). Alejandra Velasco of Howey in the Hills, FL, finished second with a three day total score of +6 (71+72+76=219). Velasco made nine birdies to go along with her second place finish. Mai Dechathipat of Howey in the Hills, FL, finished third posting a three day total score of +9 (72+79+71=222). In the third round, Dechathipat had a difficult lie on hole 8 in which she had hit her ball into a palmetto bush. She chose to play her ball instead of taking the unplayable. She hit a very nice shot from the fairway after chipping out of the bush landing the ball within inches of the pin. Dechathipat managed to save par on the hole and shot her lowest round of the tournament on Monday. In the Boys 11-14 Division, Luis Garza of Howey in the Hills, FL, took first place with a three day total score of +5 (69+75+74=218).  Garza had the most birdies in the field with a total of 11. Spenser Slayden of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, finished second with a three day total score of +5 (73+75+70=218). Slayden had the best par 3 performance (2.87), and the best par 4 performance (4.11). There was a tie for third place between David Gao of Bradenton, FL, and Michael Mattiace of Jacksonville, Fl. Gao posted a score of +6 (66+79+74=219). Gao had an impressive first round score of 66 putting him at -5 for the tournament. Mattiace posted a three day total score of +6 (72+72+75=219). Anita Uwadia of Nigeria placed first in the Girls 11-14 Division. Uwadia posted a three day total score of 223 (68+79+76). Uwadia was also able to pull off an impressive eagle on one of the most difficult holes on the course, hole 16 which was a par 5. Uwadia had the best par 4 performance average (4.11) and posted a total of five birdies for the tournament. Em Uhland of Jacksonville, FL, came in second with a three day total score of 233 (78+82+73). In round 3, Uhland managed to eagle hole 18 which was a par 5. Uhland had the best par 3 performance average (3.20) and the best par 5 performance average (4.75). Paige Lee Garris of West Palm Beach, FL, finished third with a three day total score of 243 (80+87+76).
