The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia on May 31-June 1 for another College Prep Series at UVA, which was held at Birdwood Golf Course. Both days had beautiful weather and sunny skies for the players. Players competed for Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and the top fifteen finishers received points towards year end honors which include state teams, All HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup. Winners in each division also received an automatic bid into the 2014 Tour Championship and Mid-Season Invitational.
Boys 15-18 The Boys 15-18 division was competitive throughout the weekend. Aaron Walker of Charlotte, NC took home the victory with rounds of 76 and 73, for a two day total of 149. Walker birdied two of his first three holes on day two, and fired a front nine score of one under 35. On the back nine, Walker had 2 bogeys along with 7 pars, for a two over 38. Walker won by one shot over Kase Diehl, also from Charlotte, NC, who had a two day total of 150. Diehl also started off his second round strong, and had three birdies through his first six holes and shot 2-under 34 on the front nine. Finishing third was Will Snyder from Clifton, VA, who finished with a two day total of 151. The most improved player from day one to day two was Josh Lucas from Free Union, VA, who improved by 16 strokes from his first round.
Girls 15-18 In the Girls 15-18 division, Alison Armstrong of Tampa, FL took home the victory with an impressive two day total of 155. Alison shot a four over, with a 76 in the first round, and finished with a 79 on day two. After a double bogey on the par 5, second hole, Armstrong played well during the rest of her first round. She played the remaining 16 holes going 2 over par to finish with a 76. Armstrong started strong on day 2 and shot a 1-under par on the front nine. She finished her final round with a 79.
Boys 11-14 In the Boys 11-14 division, play was competitive throughout both days of the tournament. Connor Burgess of Lynchburg, VA, led the field with 6 birdies and won by one shot after shooting rounds of 75 and 73 for a two day total of 148. Burgess had back to back birdies on holes five and six, and fired a 1-under 35 on the front nine. Finishing one shot back was Isaac Simmons, of Huddleston, Va. Simmons had rounds of 75 and 74, for a two day total of 149. Simmons started off the day with birdies on holes one and two, and shot a 2-under 34 on his opening nine on day two. Finishing just two shots behind Simmons, there was a tie for third place between Eli Newman of Leesburg, VA, and Akshay Bhatia, of Wake Forest, NC. Newman also had 6 birdies throughout the two days, and shot 78-73 while Bhatia shot 75-76 for a two day total of 151.
Girls 11-14 In the Girls 11-14 division, Rory Weinfurther of Midlothian, VA was able to capture the victory, after shooting rounds of 86 and 87, for a two day total of 173. Rory had two solid rounds to come away with the one shot victory. Coming in second place just one shot behind Weinfurther, was Sophia Burnett of Florence, SC. Sophia opened with a 90 on day one, but played much better on day 2 when she shot 84 for a two day total of 174. Sophia came back strong on day two and battled Weinfurther all afternoon for the championship. Finishing in third place was Sophia’s younger sister, Camila, who shot 106 and 108 for a two day total of 214.
