Windy Drivers through the Fairways
On October 8th and 9th 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Greenville, SC to host the College Prep Series at Furman University Golf Club. Sunday began with a cold sunrise, and at 8:00 am, the golfers begin their quest for the championship. Winners in all four age divisions will receive an automatic bid into the National Championship on December 3rd and 4th, 2016. The weekend was full of windy conditions, and every junior golfer played their best game aiming to earn possible invitations to the December National Championships in Orlando, FL. The upcoming weeks is expected to inquire a variety of talents as the junior golfers’ train and compete for major championships.

In the Girls 14-18 division, Linda Trockel of Germany took home the first place trophy. Trockel shot a first-round score of 79 which quickly distanced her from the rest of the playing field. Her two-day total of 151 gave her the victory over Caroline Hodge who she was able to defeat in the playoff. Linda Trockel of Germany was brilliantly excited at the thought of winning this College Prep Series at Furman. Also, the participants had a wonderful time at Furman Golf Course. Finishing with the best score, Trockel told our tournament director that she really loved the course and was shocked to have played so well due to weekends’ weather conditions.

In the Boys 16-18 division, after two remarkable rounds, Nathan Norfleet of Chapel Hill, NC took home the first place trophy. Norfleet shot a first-round score of 76 which quickly distanced him apart from the rest of the playing field. His two-day total of 150 edged him to victory over Graham Chase who finished with a 151. Norfleet of Chapel Hill, NC was astounded at the thought of winning this Hurricane Junior Golf event. It literally came down to the wire which determined a winner for the 16-18 boy’s division. All of the participants had a historical time at Furman Golf Club. Finishing with the best score, Norfleet told our tournament director that he enjoyed the course and wish to continue competing in Hurricane Junior Golf events.

In the Boys 11-13 age division, Jonathan Griz of Hilton Head Island took home the first place trophy. Griz had a first round one score of 73 and a second-round score of 72. Griz’s tournament total was 145. William Jennings of Greenvile, SC took home the second place trophy. Jennings had a round one score of 76 and a second-round score of 75. His tournament total was 151. His brother Walker Jennings of Greenville, SC took home the third place trophy with a tournament total of 154. Jennings had a round one score of 79 and a round two score of 75.

In the Boys 14-15 division, Connor Targonski of Waxhaw, NC took home the first place trophy with an overall score of 160. Targonski shot a first-round one score 81, and a second-round two score of 79. Although the weather was a factor throughout the course of the tournament, Targonski attained his consistent play to defeat Walter Kelley of Augusta, Ga who shot an overall score of 161.

In the Girls 13U division, Alexia Siehl took home the first place trophy. Siehl had a first- round one score of 84 and a second-round two score of 79. Siehl’s tournament total was 163. Siehl improved from round to round as she scored heavily in the second round. Siehl told the tournament director that she would have played a lot better if the strong winds weren’t a factor. However, she was quite excited about earning the first place trophy. Golfers who participate on the tour will compete in one of five age divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18, and Girls 11-13. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the nation, with stops in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, California, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Louisiana, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and more.
