Mitchell fires low for the win Donovan dominates by 14 strokes

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina on March 1-2 for the College Prep Series at NC State. Each day was a chilly day, but by the end of the day the sun was out and the temperatures rose. Awarded at this event was Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings, South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage points and Tarheel Youth Golf Association points. Winners in all four divisions received an invitation to the 2014 Mid-Season Invitational and 2014 Tour Championship. Additionally, the top 15 finishers received points towards year end honors, which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup.

At the end of the first round in the Boys 15-18 division, Eric Mitchell of Winston Salem, North Carolina tied for second with Blake Martin of Pinehurst, North Carolina after both scoring a 76. Mitchell was able to make an outstanding comeback on Sunday, mostly due to his six birdies and eagle on the 11th hole. He ended Sunday posting a 68, this low score was enough for him to capture first place. Stephen Franken of Raleigh, North Carolina was on top of the leader board after firing a round of 75 on Saturday. Franken stayed consistent posting a 75 again on Sunday to finish in second place. On Sunday, Martin made his best effort at a comeback, firing not one, but two eagles on holes seven and 11. Despite these fantastic feats, he ended the tournament third in the division.

Shining in the Girls 15-18 division was Nicolette Donovan of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. She ran away with the division title after firing a weekend total of 145, one stroke over par. Donovan finished with five birdies. Meghan Nay of Canton, Georgia edged out Keri Kenkel of Charlotte, North Carolina by one stroke to finish in second. Nay posted a weekend score of 159, which included an impressive second round of 75 and four birdies. Kenkel finished in third with a total score of 160. She was also extremely consistent on the weekend, posting two rounds of 80.

In the Boys 11-14 division, Hammy Hutchinson of Bethesda, Maryland won the division with a weekend total of 157. On Sunday, he bettered his first round score by nine strokes to secure the victory. Hutchinson had four birdies on the weekend, the most in the division. Second place went to Bryson Boyette of Wilson, North Carolina. Boyette posted rounds of 82 on Saturday and 86 on Sunday. Finishing in third place was Jack Heath of Charlotte, North Carolina. He fired an 82 and 88. Heath was very consistent on the front nine, scoring a 40 both days.

In the Girls 11-14, the competitors faced long yardages on a tough collegiate course. Prevailing to win first place was Emily Dunlap of Greenville, South Carolina. She led from the start with a score of 90 on Saturday and 100 on Sunday.
