Praying for a Victory in Chapel Hill
On July 30-31st, 2016 the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour took its talents to the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Despite several weather delays throughout the weekend, the golfers were able to stay focused and conquer the tough challenges the course has to offer. Thank you to UNC Finley Golf Course for allowing HJGT to host this event at their wonderful course. Five age divisions were in play this weekend as Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, Tarheel Youth Golf Association points, and South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage points were on the line. The top ten finishers in each division will receive points towards the Hurricane Cup. Additionally, the winner of each division will be invited to play in the National Championship held in Orlando, Florida in December. The golfers traveled from all over the country for the opportunity to play on this beautiful course.
Boys 16-18 Division
Basil Boyd was the champion of the boys 16-18 division. The native of Martinsville, Virginia shot an impressive 71 on Saturday, followed by a 77 on Sunday to lock up a first place finish with a total tournament score of 148. Chandler Perry from Clinton, North Carolina shot an even par 72 in the first round and a 78 in the second round for a 150 overall to finish in second place. Adam Hooker took home third place in the division after he was able to shoot back-to-back 76’s to finish the tournament with a 152 overall. Hunter Donahue from Washington, Pennsylvania led the division with a total of seven birdies throughout the tournament. Boyd had a total of 25 pars over the weekend to lead the division in this category. All of the competitors had a great time competing against some of the best golfers in the country and look forward to competing again in the future.
Boys 14-15 Division
Nabyant Wagner was the champion of the boys 14-15 division. Wagner out of Mount Airy, North Carolina was able to shoot a 75 in the first round and an 81 in the second round for a 156 overall to solidify his victory. Tyler Smith from Charlotte, North Carolina finished just one stroke behind Wagner for the championship after he shot an impressive 73 in the second round to finish the tournament with an overall score of 157. Jack Bruns out of Charlottesville, Virginia took home third place after he shot an 86 on Saturday and an 85 on Sunday to finish the weekend with a 171 overall. Smith led the division with a seven hole bogeyless streak throughout the tournament. He also had a total of 21 pars to lead the division in this category as well. All of the golfers showed a great deal of competitiveness and sportsmanship throughout the entire weekend.
Girls 14-18 Division
Lena Capoccia was the champion of the girls 14-18 division. The Bethesda, Maryland native shot a 78 in the first round and a 71 in the second round for a 149 overall to lock up her first place finish. Becca Dinunzio out of Norfolk, Virginia finished in second place with an overall score of 156 after shooting back-to-back 78’s in each round. Parker Perry from Richmond, Virginia, took home third place after she shot an 81 on Saturday and an 87 on Sunday to finish the weekend with a 168 overall. Perry led the division with a total of four birdies throughout the weekend. Capoccia had a 14 hole bogeyless streak to lead the division in this category. All of the golfers had a great time competing against each other and showed a great deal of sportsmanship throughout the entire weekend.
Boys 11-13 Division
Owen Kose was the winner of the boys 11-13 division. Kose, a Holly Springs, North Carolina native shot a 74 in the first round followed by an impressive 67 in the second round for a 141 overall to finish at the top of the division. Kevin Gardner out of Dryden, New York finished in second place after he was able to shoot an 81 on Saturday and an 80 on Sunday to finish the tournament with an overall score of 161. Kose had a total of 10 birdies throughout the weekend to lead the division. He also had an incredible 19 hole bogeyless streak to lead all competitors. Both of these golfers had a great time competing against each other throughout the weekend and look forward to competing again in the future.
Girls U13 Division
Liza Lapeyre was the champion of the girls U13 division. The New Orleans, Louisiana native was able to finish at the top of the division, after she shot an 83 in the first round and an 87 in the second round for an overall score of 170. Shea Smith from Charlotte, North Carolina finished in second place and just one stroke behind Lapeyre, after she was able to shoot an 87 on Saturday and an 84 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 171 overall. Smith had a total of 15 pars throughout the weekend to lead the division in this category. Lapeyre led the division in birdies with a total of two over the course of the two-day event. Both of these golfers had a great time competing against each other and look forward to competing again in the future.

About Hurricane Junior Golf Tour
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2007 with the intent of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18, and now 10 and under, an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Golfers who participate on the tour will compete in one of six age divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Boys U10, Girls 14-18, and Girls U13. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the nation, with stops in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. In 2016, we have now expanded to the west coast and cover California, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Nevada, and Oregon.
