Champions Arise on UK’s Big Blue
Lexington, KY: (May 10, 2015) The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Lexington, KY on May 9-10 for the College Prep Series at UK. The event was held on the Big Blue Course at The University of Kentucky Golf Course. Players were greeted with clear and sunny skies and temperatures climbing into the 80’s. Trophy winners in all divisions received an invitation to the 2015 Mid-Season Invitational and winners additionally received an invitation to the 2015 HJGT National Championship. Additionally, the top ten finishers in each division received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup.
Tanner Grzegorczyk led wire to wire to claim the title in the Boys 15-18 Division at The College Prep Series at UK. Grzegorczyk began his tournament with an opening round 72 to lead by one shot over eventual runner up finisher Daniel Hamrin heading into the final round. Grezegorczyk’s opening round featured three birdies to go along with three bogeys. On Sunday Grezegorczyk made bogies on his 3rd and 4th hole, but rebounded with a birdie on the 5th and added an eagle on the par 4 9th hole playing 326 yards and birdies on the 14th and 17th holes. Grzegorczyk would win by just one shot over Hamrin who matched the winner’s final round of 77 on Sunday. Blake Young would round out the top 3 finishers with rounds of 79-74 (153). Hamrin would lead in most birdies made over the weekend with a total of seven and also led par 3 scoring averaging 2.8 stokes. Tanner Grzegorczyk and Gannon Godsey would lead in par 4 scoring averaging 4.2 strokes over the weekend.
Ellen Kehoe would capitalize on a strong final round to grab her fourth win of the 2015 season at The College Prep Series at UK. Kehoe has won every event she has played in in 2015 with wins at the Orlando Junior Challenge, Space Coast Junior Classic, Timacuan Junior Shootout, and the College Prep Series at UK. Coming into the final round on Sunday Kehoe trailed opening round leader Kie Purdom by one shot. Kehoe was able to get off to a quick start on Sunday with a birdie on her opening hole and added an eagle on the par 5 5th hole and birdies on 9, 10, and 11. Kehoe was followed on the leader board by Marissa Kirkwood with rounds of 76-73 and Kie Purdom with rounds of 71-81. Kehoe would lead statistically in several categories including most birdies made (9), par 3 scoring (2.8), and par 4 scoring (4.0). Kristin Engle and Leslie Ginter would lead in par 5 scoring averaging 5.0 strokes. Congratulations to Ellen Kehoe on her 4th win on the 2015 season!
Coming fresh off a win last weekend at The Major Championship at Gettysvue Gavin Noble captured his second win of the 2015 season at The College Prep Series at UK. Noble would trail by three strokes entering the final round and would not waste time on Sunday going out in 32 with birdies on the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 8th holes. Noble would win by three strokes over Walker Beck who would finish with rounds of 82 and an impressive final round 71. Behind Beck was Drew Doyle who had a 36 hole total of 156. Noble would lead statistically in several categories including most birdies made (7), par 4 scoring (4.2), and par 5 scoring (4.9). Walker Beck and Tucker Windham would both tie for low par 3 scoring average (3.0). Congratulations to Gavin Noble on his back to back wins!
Luke Herbst would lead wire to wire to win the Boys 11-12 Division at The College Prep Series at UK. Herbst would shoot rounds of 86-92 to capture the title over Thomas Hawse (202). Hawse would make things interesting on Sunday with a birdie on the difficult par 4 10th hole. Hawse would lead in most birdies made over the weekend while Herbst would lead in par 3 scoring (4.1), par 4 scoring (4.9), and par 5 scoring (5.9). The win is the first of Herbst’s season! Memberships for the 2015 season start at $139 and tournament fees range from $189-$229 for 36 hole events.
