The College Prep Series made its most recent stop at The Walker Course at Clemson University on July 22-23. The beautifully designed Walker Course, situated on the banks of Lake Hartwell, had received lots of rain in the days leading up to the event causing three holes to be unplayable. Golfers were forced to play holes 10-12 a second time to complete their eighteen hole rounds. Despite the recent rain, the weather was great for the golfers as there were no weather delays. The College Prep Series at Clemson offered AJGA Performance Stars for the Boys and Girls 15-18 division. There were also South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage and Tarheel Youth Golf Association points available. Winners in all four divisions will receive an invitation to the 2013 Tour Championship, and top 15 finishers receive points towards end of the year honors and the Hurricane Cup.
The Boys 15-18 Division came down to a dramatic, three way playoff on hole 18. Shanren Brienen of Orlando, FL, Jackson Bishop of Gainesville, GA and Graham Farmer of Anderson, SC were all tied with a 138 (-2) total after 36 holes. The trio of golfers made their way to the 18th tee for the first playoff hole where they all made pars. After Bishop and Brienen made bogeys on the second playoff hole, also the 18th, Graham Farmer would make a double bogey to fall out of the race for first place. On the third time through the 18th, Brienen and Bishop would both make pars and they were on to the fourth playoff hole. Again, both golfers would match each other as both made bogeys and there would be a fifth playoff hole. It would prove to be the final playoff hole as Brienen made a ten foot birdie putt to take the title. Brienen made six birdies over the two days and was fourth in the division with a 4.05 average on the par fours. Bishop and Farmer would lead the division with seven birdies, which won them the EFX Birdie Challenge Bracelet. Will Bradley of Savannah, GA would take the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week with a 12 stroke improvement.
Madison Caldwell of Dawsonville, GA was the champion of the Girls 15-18 Division with a 144 (+4) total. Madison’s rounds of 71 and 73 were enough to give her a three shot victory. Caldwell led in par four and par five performance with 4.20 and 4.67 averages respectively. In second place was Athens, GA native, Anna Buchanan. Anna’s five birdies were second most in the division and she led in par three performance with a 2.90 average. Third place was claimed by Cara Gowder of Maysville, GA. Gowder shot consistent rounds of 75 and 76, but wasn’t enough as she was seven shots back of first with a 151 (+11) total. Miranda Dubler of Mason, OH won the EFX Birdie Challenge with her six birdies. Karley Hammond of Buford, GA won the Golf Pride grips with a nine shot improvement.
In the Boys 11-14 Division, Greenville, SC native Dan Castleberry took home first place with rounds of 79 and 69 for a 148 (+8) total. Castleberry led the division in birdies with five, and shot the only subpar round in the division. Castleberry was two shots better than second place finisher Christian Nido of Palmetto Bay, FL. Nido was the day one leader after his 74 on Monday, but couldn’t hold off the red hot Castleberry. Nido had three birdies and led in pars with 23. In third place was David Roberts of Orlando, FL. Roberts had rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151 (+11) total and was three shots back of first place. Roberts was second in the division with 22 pars. Dan Castleberry continued his collection of awards with the EFX Birdie Challenge Bracelet for his five birdies and his ten shot improvement was good enough for the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week.
Sabrina Hoskins of Orlando, FL won her 11th tournament of the 2013 season with her five shot victory at The Walker Course. Her rounds of 73 and 71 were good enough for a five shot win. Sabrina had three birdies and led in par three and par five performance with par averages on those holes. Ashleigh Bishop of Gainesville, GA was the second place finisher with a total of 149 (+9). Bishop also had three birdies and the second most pars with 23. Sabrina’s younger sister, Sydney took home third place with a 152 (+12) total.
