The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour continued its College Prep Series when it went to The University of Louisville’s Cardinal Club on November 2-3 for the College Prep Series at Louisville. The College Prep Series is a series of events played on some of the best college courses in the region. Winners in all four divisions received an invitation to the 2013 Tour Championship and top 15 finishers received points towards end of the year honors and the Hurricane Cup.
D.J. Vogt of Louisville, KY walked away victorious at the College Prep at Louisville on Sunday for the boys 15-18 division. D.J started off slow by having six bogeys on Saturday on his way to a 76 in the first round. However, on Sunday D.J played a very steady round with only two bogeys the entire day and shooting 2 birdies in the front and 2 birdies on the backside. Blake Cartwright of Winchester, KY finished second shooting a 76 and a 74 on the weekend. Blake had an eventful round on Saturday with a double and triple bogey on the front side, but rallied on the backside to sink 3 birdies. On Sunday, Blake had a better round but still had 5 bogeys through the first eleven holes; much like Saturday Blake closed out with 3 birdies on the final seven holes. Blake would earn the title of EFX Birdie Challenge winner when he made 8 birdies for the weekend. Michael Vissing and Allen Hamilton finished tied for third place with final scores of 154. Michael shot an even par round on Sunday but it wasn’t enough to make up for the 9 bogeys he shot on Saturday. Allen on the other hand had a steady day on Saturday with 4 birdies but struggled to finish on Sunday with 8 bogeys, 7 being on the backside.
Mackenzie Peyton of Newcastle, KY won the older girls division on Sunday. Mackenzie had a good Saturday by paring 12 holes, 7 being on the front side but struggled on the backside with 4 bogeys. On Sunday, Mackenzie struggled paring only ten holes while double bogeying two holes on the backside but it was still good enough to win. Gypsie Hutchinson of Lexington, KY tied with Meredith Moir of Louisville, KY for second place. Gypsie struggled on Saturday with 3 bogeys and 3 double bogeys but recovered on Sunday with 10 pars and 1 birdie. Meredith had a solid day on Saturday with 11 pars and 1 birdie that came on the front side, however Sunday proved to be a tougher day for her shooting 8 bogeys and 3 double bogeys. Burton, Purdom, and Son would all share the title of EFX Birdie Challenge Winner with 2 birdies apiece.
Being consistent helped Mason Lenhart of Prospect, KY win the boys 11-14 division. With a 77 in both rounds, Mason’s start was rough having two double bogeys on the front side along with two more bogeys. However, Mason was able to birdie three holes before the conclusion of the round. On Sunday, Mason played a little more consistent with 11 pars and a birdie that helped recover from the 6 bogeys on the day. Robbie Keyes of Louisville, KY finished second after a rough first round that saw him have 9 bogeys and a double bogey. Sunday was a much better day for Robbie; he did have 7 bogeys on the day but had a great backside with 7 pars. Andrew Sullivan of Louisville finished third after a much better Sunday. Andrew struggled on Saturday bogeying 11 of the 18 holes, but recovered Sunday with 10 pars and 2 birdies on the day.
Morgan Tinsley of Louisville won the younger girls division on Sunday. Morgan played consistent on Saturday with 8 pars that helped her recover from the 2 double bogeys on the day. Sunday was a long day for Morgan as she had four double bogeys on the day, yet it was enough for her to win the division. Ryan Bender of Louisville placed second in the division.
