Gutierrez wins in sudden death playoff
Name's second round gives her 10 shot victory
Fox Den Country Club in Statesville, North Carolina hosted the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Charlotte Jr. Challenge on October 19-20. The National Junior Golf Scoreboard ranked event featured a competitive field on a great venue in the Charlotte area. Winners in all four divisions will be invited to the HJGT’s 2013 Tour Championship and also receive a $50 gift card courtesy of Kikkor Golf. There are also South Carolina Junior Golf Association points and Tarheel Youth Golf Association points available. Top ten finishers will receive points towards the inaugural Hurricane Cup and the year end honors.
Boys 15-18: Corrie Kuehn of Ashville, NC held a 2 shot lead entering the final round after posting an even par 72. Kuehn finished his round making birdie on the 18th hole giving him 3 birdies, 3 bogeys, and 12 pars on Saturday. Justin Lang of Winston Salem, NC trailed Kuehn on Saturday after posting 74. Jonathan Henry and Hector Gutierrez posted rounds of 75 to trail Kuehn’s lead by 3 shots heading into Sunday’s final round. Hector Gutierrez emerged as the Boys 15-18 champion after a 3 way sudden death playoff. Gutierrez fired a second 75 on Sunday to finish with a 150 total. Justin Lang and Bernardo Martinez joined Gutierrez in the playoff after closing rounds of 76 and 73. Gutierrez sealed his win making a 10 foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole.
Girls 15-18: All players entered the final round with a chance to capture the Girls 15-18 title. Ximena Name and Savannah Hallman shared the lead after posting rounds of 82 on Saturday. Maria Cassas was 3 shots back after turning in an 85 and Fiona Hebbel posted a round of 88. Entering the final round sharing the lead, Ximena Name closed with a final round 1 under par 71 giving her a 10 shot victory. Name attributed her great play Sunday to not over thinking her shots and making more pars. Name had 3 birdies on her back 9 on Sunday to help secure the win. Savannah Hallman would claim second with a final round 81 and a 163 two day total. Rounding out the Girls 15-18 Division was Maria Cassas, who finished with a two day total of 170.
Boys 11-14: Patten Williams of Davidson, NC stole the show on Saturday firing a three under par round of 69 to take a 5 shot lead into the final round. Williams opened his round with 10 straight pars before closing with 4 birdies and 1 bogey in his final 8 holes. Williams is coming off of a win at The College Prep Series at Furman in August and a top 5 finish at The Major Championship in Charlotte in September. Behind Williams was Sam McGee of Charlotte, NC who posted a two over par round of 74. Fafo Beirana was just one shot behind McGee after a posting a 75 on Saturday. Patten Williams won the Boys 11-14 Division after a 5 hole sudden death playoff. Williams, coming off a first round 69 struggled early on in the final round, but rebounded with two birdies on his back nine to shoot a 79. Sam McGee joined Williams in the playoff after shooting a second straight 74 and finish at 148. Williams would emerge as the champion on the 5th playoff hole. Javier Gonzalez finished 3rd in the Boys 11-14 Division after shooting a final round 74 and a 150 two day total.
Girls 11-14: Sophie Holland of Cornelius, NC held a slim one shot lead heading into the final round over Rachel Kuehn of Ashville, NC. Holland posted a opening round 84 and Kuehn 85. Michelle Harn came in with an opening round 91 to sit in 3rd place. Rachel Kuehn secured the win in the Girls 11-14 Division after shooting a final round 80 giving her a 7 shot victory. Kuehn credited her consistent play over the two days to her win. Sophie Holland would finish second after firing rounds of 84 and 88. Michelle Harn would round out the Girls 11-14 Division after turning in a two day total of 180.
