Central Texas Junior Shootout
May 7-8, 2016
On Thurs., May 5, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Brownwood, Texas, to host the Central Texas Junior Shootout held at The Hideout Golf Club. Warm weather greeted the field of 38 players for this 36-hole event. Boys 11-18 and Girls 14-18 received Junior Golf Scoreboard ranking. Winners in each age division received an invitation to the 2016 HJGT Tour Championship on Dec. 3-4, while the top three in each division received invitations to the 2016 HJGT Druh Belts Mid Season Invitational at Chateau Elan on June 11-13.
Boys 16-18 Division

Dalton Hankamer of Temple, Texas, carded a 77 was tied for fourth place and five strokes off the lead heading into Sunday, but his resiliency paid off in coming back for victory. A scorching round of 69, the low round of the tournament, led his comeback. Hankamer carded seven birdies during his round to win by two strokes. Hankamer edged out fellow Texans Jaryn Pruitt of Brownwood and Tye Masters of Wall. Pruitt owned a two-stroke lead entering No. 16 on Sunday, but a pair of birdies for Hankamer and a pair of bogeys for Pruitt flipped the script. Masters, on the other hand, closed with two birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to move from fourth to a tie for second place out of 12 in the division. Hankamer also led the division with 10 total birdies.
Boys 14-15 Division

The Boys 14-15 division featured the largest margin of victory as Rance Russell of Breckenridge, Texas, cruised to a 35-stroke victory. Russell carded rounds of 93 and 85 and sunk four total birdies. In second place out of three was Heath Owens of Baird, Texas, who recorded scores of 114 and 99. Lastly, Nathan Hanzelka of Eastland, Texas, finished with totals of 120 and 116.
Boys 11-13 Division

Clayton Smith[/caption] The top three competitors all finished within one stroke of each other in a tightly contested division. Clayton Smith of Round Rock, Texas, emerged from the pack thanks to scores of 80 and 81 (+17). Smith edged out Texans Karson Grigsby (82-80, +18) of Abilene and Kyle Nguyenphu (85-77) of Allen. Though Nguyenphu just missed out on the title, he had the round of the tournament with a 77 on Sunday that featured three birdies in a row on Nos. 14-16 in a near-comeback bid. Grigsby also made birdie on No. 18, while Smith made bogey to nearly erase a three-stroke deficit entering the hole. Smith only had one birdie for the tournament, but his ability to avoid trouble aided his victorious effort.
Boys 10U Division
Dylan Ford of Sonora, Texas, was the lone competitor in the Boys 10 and under division. Ford carded rounds of 86 and 81 (+23) and had two birdies to his name on the weekend.
Girls 14-18 Division

The Girls 14-18 division came down to the wire as Elle Fox of Copperas Cove, Texas, made three straight pars to close out the victory on Sunday. Thanks to rounds of 77 and 78 (+11), Fox finished three ahead of Ryann Honea of San Angelo, Texas. Honea also closed with three pars to put the pressure on and had a one-stroke lead making the turn, but a 41 on the back nine kept her from the winner’s circle. She finished with rounds of 78 and 80 (+14) Taking third place out of 13 was Jade Staudt of Fort Worth, Texas. Staudt carded rounds of 79 and 80 (+15).
Girls 13U Division
Paige Goodman of Abilene, Texas, completed the Texas sweep as all six division winners hailed from the Lone Star state. Goodman edged out three others in the division thanks to rounds of 98 and 94 (+48). Goodman tallied four pars en route to an 11-stroke victory. In second place was JJ Betz (108-95, +59) of Keller, Texas. JJ finished five ahead of sister Jax, who finished with consecutive rounds of 104 (+64).
