On October 17th and 18th, 2015, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to beautiful Acworth, Georgia to host the Canongate Series Invitational at Bentwater Golf Club. The course was in good shape, playing conditions were great, and it was also a well-challenged tournament for the long two days of golf. On Saturday, the first day of the tournament, it was cool and sunny with a strong breeze to make the first day enjoyable. On Sunday, we were blessed to have another great day of playing conditions again which was a great cap to the tournament. Winners in all five-age divisions will receive an automatic bid to the Tour Championship on December 5th and 6th, 2015. The weekend was unbeatable all around, and the top ten finishers also received points towards end year honors, which include state teams, all HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
In the boys 15-18 division the champion of the Fenton Cup from Dacula, Georgia is Hunter Fry! Hunter came out ready to play some tough competitive golf this weekend and he that he did shooting a two day total of 147. He got off to a great start on Saturday with a birdie on the first hole, a tough par 5 and was able to pick up two more birdies along the way. Leaving himself in contention with a round of 77 on a tough course Hunter knew he’d have to come out on Sunday with his A-game and he absolutely crushed it with a round of 70. After shooting par through nine holes Hunter turned up the heat on the back nine going two under through the next four holes and maintaining that score through the finish. Hunter Fry’s name will forever be engraved into the Fenton Cup trophy that we presented at todays awards ceremony. Following close behind in second place was Davis B Smith from Johns Creek, Georgia. Smith was our leader after the first round on Saturday shooting an incredible round of 74. He was able to fight through some tough wind that was swirling from all different directions on Saturday. Smith was able to capture a birdie on a tough par 4 Sunday and finish the day with another impressive round of 76. In third place for the weekend we had the ever-familiar Preston Wagaman from Martinez, Georiga. Whenever Preston plays in a tournament you can bet he’s going to be right in there contending for the title. Preston shot an impressive round of 76 on Saturday where he was able to give himself a great shot at placing in the top 3 spots for the weekend. He came out fighting on Sunday where he was able to pick up three birdies while going for it all on every hole. Overall, the boys 15-18 division had a very exciting week, and every competitor in the field displayed two high quality rounds of golf. I
n the boys 13-14 age division coming down to the wire with an exciting finish we have Gavin Noble from Ringgold, Georgia taking home the title of champion this weekend. It was apparent Gavin was hungry for another title coming into the weekend as he got off to a great start with six birdies on Saturday! He finished the round with an outstanding score of 74 on a challenging day considering the conditions. On Sunday Gavin knew he was in for a challenging day with the competition he had around him. With the title on the line in a playoff between himself and Shyam Joshi, Gavin was able to birdie the first playoff hole to capture the victory. As mentioned before and following right behind Gavin in second place was Shyam Joshi from Dacula, Georgia. Shyam must have ate his Wheaties on Saturday as he started off the first hole with an eagle after a monster drive and approach shot. He finished the day with a strong score of 78 to put him right there in contention for Sunday. Shyam continued his hot start on the front nine by shooting one under again on Sunday and finished the day with an awesome round of 74 to force the playoff. Last but certainly not least was Liam Shinn from Norcross, Georgia finishing up in third place in a very competitive division. Liam is another very talented golfer that is known through the HJGT organization. He shot a strong round of 78 on Saturday and was able to improve that by two stroke on Sunday. Liam finished the weekend with three birdies and a very impressive eagle! The boys 13-14 division had a very exciting week, and every competitor in the field displayed two high quality rounds of golf.
In the boys 11-12 division we had probably the most consistent and impressive golfers out here with Jake Peacock from Alpharetta, Georgia capturing first place with ease. Jake was turning heads after shooting the first day’s lowest score of 71 on Saturday ending the round strong with a birdie on hole 18. Jake came out focused and ready to take home the title on Sunday shooting another incredible round of 73, all while snagging four more birdies adding to his total of six on the weekend. His two day total of 144 was the tournaments best and Jake should certainly be proud of his play this weekend on a very challenging course, we look forward to talking about him for years to come. Following up in second place was Deven Patel from Locust Grove, Georgia who was another golfer that came out strong from the start with a round of 77 on Saturday. Patel was able to fight the wind and really zone in on his shots to help set him up for a solid start to the weekend. Not far behind and in third place was Evan Reed from Shelbyville, Tennessee. After a rough start on Saturday Mr. Reed knew he could turn it around and was determined to do so. He shot an incredible 16 stokes better on Sunday for an awesome round of 74. He’s definitely a name to keep an ear out for in the future. Overall the boys 11-12 division had a very exciting week, and every competitor in the field displayed two high quality rounds of golf.
In the girls 15-18 division and the other champion who will get her name placed on the Fenton Cup is Diana Liu from Johns Creek, Georgia. Diana got off to a strong start on Saturday shooting one under par through nine holes and followed that up with another birdie on the 10th hole. She finished the day with an outstanding round of 73 with some very talented putting on some tough greens. Diana was able to really grasp the speeds of these tricky greens, which helped separate herself from her competition. She finished the weekend with a two-day total of 151 and captured the title of champion for the weekend. Coming in second place was Jordyn Sims from Berkeley Lake, Georgia who also shot an impressive round of 76 on Saturday. She was able to start and finish her first and ninth hole on Saturday with a birdie and then grab another one on the following nine. She brings a lot of passion and excitement to the game and is always a pleasure to have around the course. In third place we have Harmanprit Kaur from Lawrenceville, Georgia who was able to play consistent enough to place in the top three this weekend. Kaur was able to grab a birdie on both of her two rounds and end the weekend with a two-day total of 163. The girls 15-18 division had a very exciting week, and every competitor in the field displayed two high quality rounds of golf.
In the girls 11-14 division we had a very competitive bunch but Sara Im from Duluth, Georgia was able to capture the title of champion on the weekend. She started the week off 1 stroke behind but was able to maintain her focus and shoot another impressive round of 80 on Sunday. She ended the weekend with a two-day total of 162 and added another 1st place finish to her resume. Coming in second place was Kimberly Shen from Johns Creek, Georgia with a two-day total of 169. Kimberly was able to come out to a good start on Saturday with a round of 81 and keep it up on Sunday. Last but not least was Thienna Huynh from Lilburn, Georgia who took third place. Thienna was able to score three birdies on the weekend and end her weekend with a strong round of 82. She improved her round by 11 strokes on Sunday and will definitely be a contender in the near future if she keeps up the strong play. The girls 11-14 division had a very exciting week, and every competitor in the field displayed two high quality rounds of golf.
