The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made a stop at Heron Bay Golf Club in Locust Grove, GA to host the Canongate Series #5. The weather conditions were ideal for both days of the tournament this week. The tournament saw a lot of close competition in all divisions. All the winners of each division received an invite to the 2015 HJGT National Championship at Champions Gate. During the first round of the tournament, all play was halted at 3:00 PM and a moment of silence was held in memory of HJGT Member, Joseph Dumphy who recently passed away after a tragic car accident. Dumphy a 15 year old from Dawsonville, GA last played in the Mid-Season Invitational at Chateau-Elan.
The Boys 15-18 division saw some thrilling golf between all competitors with 11 players impressively breaking 150 on their two day totals. Logan Perkins from Locust Grove, GA was able to claim the victory by three shots after posting scores of 70, -2 on day one and an impressive six under par 66 on day two for a two day total of 136. Perkins opened the tournament with even par on the front nine and played the final 27 holes, impressively at 8 under par. Coming in second place this week was Peter Chung of Decula, GA with a two day total of 139 after posting scores of 70, -2 and 69, -3. Chung’s tournament was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 5th hole in round one. Coming in third place this week was David Bartels of Peachtree City, GA, with a two day total of 141 after shooting scores of 69, -3, and even par 72. Bartels, the round one leader was able to put together a solid round on day two to walk away with the third place trophy. In the end Logan Perkins was able to hold off the competition and win the Canongate Series #5 at Heron Bay Golf Club.
The Boys 13-14 was won by Brandon Cho of Suwanee, GA by two strokes after shooting a two day total of 146 with a 75, +3 on day one and a 71, -1 on day two. With his 71, Cho was the only player in the division with a round under par. Coming in second place this week was Jason Quinlan of Cumming, GA with a two day total of 148 after posting identical scores of 74, +2 both days. Quinlan recorded an impressive seven birdies during the tournament to help him earn second place honors. Coming in third place this week was Luigi Phillips of Peachtree City, GA, with a two day total of 153 after shooting scores of 77, +5, and 76, +4. Phillips was able to record 5 birdies during his second round to help him edge the competition for third place this weekend. In the end Brandon Cho was able to hold off the competition and win the Canongate Series #5 at Heron Bay Golf Club.
The Boys 11-12 division was one of the most competitive divisions of the entire tournament with the top two separated by only eleven strokes after 36 holes. Despite making only three birdies through both rounds, Andrew Garger was able to put back to back rounds in the low 70’s that helped add the distance he needed to take the victory. During the second day, Connor Macmillan out of nearby Canton, GA had a great round with two birdies and two bogeys that brought him in for a second round total of 72, but the first round is what separated Macmillan and Garger. In third place Anthonay Ford II from Atlanta battled hard, but struggled today with three bogeys, and four double bogeys to come in with a round of 88. Anthony’s first round was a little better despite having eight total bogeys bringing him in at an 83. Overall it was a great two days for this age group with some great golf.
The Girls 15-18 division was won by Carol Pyon who had a two day score of 139. Carol’s best score came on Sunday in round 2 with a 69, -3 and a 70,-2 on Saturday. Carol went into the second round with a three stroke lead and was able to cement the win with an eagle on the sixteenth hole. Coming in second place was Macy Somoskey. Macy came into Sunday’s round tied for second with two other girls but was able to sustain second place even with only one birdie during the round. Macy had her best day on Saturday with a 73, +1 and a 76, +4 on Sunday. Coming in third place was Savanah Satterfield. Savanah came into the second round ties for second with a Saturday score of 73, +1 but struggled a little more on Sunday and fell into third place. One bright spot for Savanah was an eagle on the 11th hole that was able to keep her in third place.
In the Girls 11-14 division, Liza Eubanks took home the title, with a total two day score of 156. Liza had her best day on Saturday with a 75. +3 and an 81. +8 on Sunday. Coming in second place was Eujin Pyon. Eujin had a two day score of 161 with her best score on Sunday with a 78, +6. Eujin had a great second round and was very close to closing in on eventual winner Liza until she struggles on the last four holes of the tournament and created the separation between first and second. Coming in third was Brooke Krieg. Brooke had a two day score of a 173 with her best day coming on Sunday with an 83, +11. Brooke had her ups and downs throughout the tournament with both multiple birdies and multiple double bogies. With only a 5 stroke difference between first and second at the end of the tournament, it made for a very interesting end of the second round.
