The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Sharpsburg, Georgia on Memorial Day Weekend, to host the Canongate Series #3 at Canongate Golf Club. The Canongate Series #3 was a 54 hole event that took place from Saturday, May 24th – Monday, May 26th. Although the weather report called for thunderstorms both Sunday and Monday, not a drop of rain fell during tournament play. Boys 15-18, Boys 11-14, and Girls 15-18 all competed for AJGA Performance Stars. Winners in each division will also receive an automatic bid into the 2014 Tour Championship December 6-7 and Mid Season Invitational June 22-24. Furthermore, players competed for Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points. The top 10 finishers receive points toward year-end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
S.M Lee came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and shot a two under par 70 in the first round. Although he only led by two strokes after the first round, he put up a two over 74 in the second round and increased his lead to four shots heading into the final day. However, Lee knew his lead wasn’t safe just yet. 15 year old Jake Milanowski was ready to grab a come-from-behind victory on his home course. Heading onto the 9th tee in the final round, Milanowski was three under through eight holes. Leader S.M. Lee was one under for the round, and Milanowski trailed Lee by two shots. It looked like Milanowski would give Lee everything he had on the back nine after he landed his approach shot about 12 feet from the pin on the 9th green. However, the massive downward slope on the 9th green led Milanowski to a 3-putt and he never recovered. Milanowski came within one stroke of the lead heading to the 17th tee after birdying 16 and watching Lee bogey 15 and 16. After missing the green with his tee shot on 17, Milanowski bogeyed the final two holes and watched Lee walk away with the first place trophy. Samuel Asbury finished in 3rd place five shots back of the winner.
Girls 15-18 After a strong first day with a two over par 74, Annie Swords couldn't capitalize to take home first. Jenny Bae carded a two over 74 on Day 2, and that proved to be enough to hang on. Although Swords and Jordan Daniel were just one and two shots back after Day 2, respectively, Bae finished strong to claim the first place trophy. Heading onto the back 9 in the third and final round, Swords and Jordan kept pace and were both two strokes behind Bae. Bae looked under control on most of the front 9, but a wild sand shot on the 6th led to a double bogey and made it a three horse race to the finish line. Daniel was five over through the first six holes on the back 9, but Swords caught up to Bae and they headed to the 17th tee nodded up. However, Swords triple-bogeyed the 17th and Bae won the tournament by those three strokes. Daniel took the 3rd place trophy home and finished five shots back of Bae.
Boys 11-14Luka Karaulic led after Round 1 by three strokes after shooting a four over par 76. After a strong first round, he still improved his score in both Rounds 2 and 3 to claim a comfortable victory. Although Karaulic scored a 74 in Round 2 and a one under 71 in Round 3, 2nd place winner Stephen Foernsler matched his scores on both days. Had Foernsler shot better than a nine over par 81 on the first day, Karaulic could have gotten some heat down the stretch on the final day. Erik Forberg took home 3rd after finishing eight shots back of the lead.
Cameron Daniel shot an impressive even par 72 on the first day of the Canongate Series #3. She built a 15 shot lead after two days of play, but she started her final round five over through the first seven holes. Her playing partner, Ashely Shim, went one over through the first seven holes. Although Shim played very admirably on the final day, she finished four strokes back as Daniel’s 15 shot lead was too much to overcome. Liza Eubanks finished in 3rd place behind Daniel and Shim.
