Shipp’s Nine Birdies Lead to Victory
Skinner’s First Round of 71 Propels her to Victory
Statham, GA was the most recent stop for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour as they hosted the Athens Junior Shootout at The Georgia Club on August 24-25. With a beautiful weekend of sunny skies and 80 degree weather, the junior golfers were in full swing. There was a lot at stake at the event as the winners in the Boys 15-18, Boys 11-14, and Girls 15-18 receive AJGA Performance stars and an invitation to the HJGT’s 2013 Tour Championship. Those winners also receive a $50 Kikkor Golf gift card. The winners, along with other top ten finishers will receive points towards year-end honors. Those points will also count towards the 2013 Hurricane Cup.
In the Boys 15-18 Division the tournament was won by Benjamin Shipp of Duluth, Georgia. With a one stroke lead over Jackson Bishop after the first round, Shipp was able to continue his solid play into the second round and finish the tournament with a score of 138 (-6). Also winning the EFX Birdies Challenge, Shipp lead the field with 9 birdies for the tournament, paired along with his 16 hole bogey free streak and his top performance on par 4’s. Finishing in second place just two strokes behind Shipp was Jackson Bishop, from Gainesville, Georgia, who challenge Shipp the entire tournament. Bishop had 8 birdies on the tournament and led the field in performance on par 3’s. Alexander DeRosa, Thomas Hodges, and States Fort would all finish tied for third with final scores of 145 to finish one over for the tournament. Fort, from Evans, Georgia, and Hodges, from Monroe, Georgia, both had 8 birdies for the tournament while DeRosa, from Atlanta, Georgia, had a third best in the field 25 pars. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week goes to Cody Teal, who improved his first round score by 11 strokes on day two.
Isabella Skinner’s, of Cumming, Georgia, first round of 71 led her to victory in the Girls 15-18 Division. Isabella’s final score of 150 (+6) was achieved by a field best of 27 total pars. Skinner also had the best performance on the back 9 with an average of 38.5 score. Coming one stroke behind Skinner was Gracie Henderson of Norcross, Georgia. With 3 birdies and 23 pars, Gracie finished the final three holes with three pars to seal spot in second place. Harmanprit Kaur from Lawrenceville, Georgia finished in third with rounds of 76 and 78 for a final score of 154 (+6). Kaur finished the tournament with 22 pars and 2 birdies. Anna Greer was the EFX Birdies Challenge winner with a field best of 4 birdies. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Players of the Week were Kelsey Kurnett and Anna Greer, both improving their first round score by 9 strokes on the second day.
It was Brady Keran of Canton, Georgia who was playing cool in the heat of weekend, shooting at 75 and 71 for a total of 146(-1) for the tournament in the Boys 11-14 Division. Leading the field in nearly every category, Brady had 4 birdies, 26 pars, and the best performance on par 3’s and par 4’s. This performance gave Brady a three stroke lead over second place finisher Jordan Rodriquez of Buford, Georgia, who finished the tournament with a score of 149 (+1). Rodriguez would also have 4 birdies on his scorecard along with 24 pars. Finishing in a tie for third at 157 was Brendan Hughes of Kennesaw, Georgia and Jet Tickle of Bristol, Tennessee. With a birdie on the final hole of round two, Brendan Hughes was able to secure his spot in the top three. Winners of an EFX bracelet for the most birdies was Brady Keran, Davis Smith, and Jordan Rodriguez with four a piece. Nixie Bojanovic improved his first round score of 91 by 7 strokes to secure the Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week.
In the Girls 11-14 Division it was all Leiko Niwano of Duluth, Georgia who shot a 72 on the first day and never looked back. Shooting a final score of 150 (+6). Niwano had the best performance on par 3’s par 4’s with an average of 2.8 and 4.2 respectively. Contributing to Niwano’s win was her six birdies, which also made her the EFX Birdies Challenge winner. A three-way tie for second place between Alejandra Ayala of Alpharetta, Georgia, Haley Grable of Bogart, Georgia, and Skylar Thompson of Buford, Georgia rounded out the top finishers. Shooting a 157 for the tournament, Thompson had 4 birdies while Ayala and Grable had 21 pars each. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week was Kate Owens who improved her score by 6 strokes.
