Arizona Winter Classic

(November 26-27, 2016)

On Thursday November 24th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour arrived in Buckeye, AZ while celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday. The beautiful Verrado Country Club hosted the tour, which featured 30 players competing across 4 separate divisions. Verrado’s course featured narrow fairways with sprawling deserts and mountains, which had players eager to go out and compete. Low scores and exciting finishes came as a result of these conditions. Boys and Girls in the 14-18 year old divisions were competing to earn Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings.   Boys 16-18 Division

The Boys 16-18 division was made up of ten competitors from all over North America. The 2nd and 3rd place finishers, Keaton Veillette of Toronto, Ontario and Sam Diamond of Winnipeg, Manitoba, both traveled over country lines to compete in this competition. The trip was well worth it as both players went home with a new trophy. Sam Diamond, the 3rd place finisher, shot very consistently with a day one 76 and a day two 77. Keaton Veillette finished day one in 3rd place with a 78. Veillette had the round of the day on Sunday with a 74 to hop over Sam and claim a 2nd place finish. Vincent Cortese of Flagstaff, AZ had the leading score after a day one 75. However, his day two 76 proved to be enough to stay in the lead. His par streak over the last three holes sealed his victory over the very talented player field.  Girls 14-18 Division

Lauren Garcia of Gilbert, AZ, showed how strong of a competitor she was this weekend. Lauren finished day one with a 73 to start day two in 2nd place. Her day two 78 was enough to keep her in 2nd in a tough division. Tiegan Taylor of Kelowna, British Columbia recorded the best score in the tournament with a day one 70. In the end, Tiegan’s day two 78 was enough to stay above the rest of the competition to earn her another Hurricane 1st place trophy.     Boys 14-15
