Suri wins in thrilling playoff
Stone’s consistency puts her on top
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Fernandina Beach, Florida on January 11-12 for the Amelia National Junior Shootout. Inclement weather suspended play in the first round for both girl divisions. They resumed play of the first round on Sunday morning before beginning their second rounds. The winner of the girls 11-14 age division received one AJGA performance star, while all other divisions were ranked by the NJGS. Florida Junior Tour Exemptions were awarded to the winner of the boys 15-18, boys 11-14 and girls 15-18 divisions. Additionally, winners in all four divisions received an invitation to the 2014 Mid-Season Championship and the 2014 Tour Championship. The top 10 finishers received points towards year end honors including state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup
At the end of the first round, Devin Suri of St. Augustine, FL and Bk Choi from Jacksonville, FL were tied after posting scores of 72 of Saturday. On Sunday, Suri and Choi continued their fine play with scores of 78. Their weekend scores of 150, +6, took them to a sudden death playoff. It took five holes for Suri to finally defeat Choi and take home the boys 15-18 division trophy. Suri also had the most birdies on the weekend with eight. Choi took home the 2nd place trophy after a great weekend of play. Jake Nelson of Jacksonville, FL finished in 3rd place with a score of 151, +7, barely missing the sudden death playoff. Nelson was able to boost himself into third place after a second round score of 75.
In a first round interrupted by weather, Karson Stone of Thomasville, GA finished atop the leaderboard in the Girls 15-18 division with a score of 79. Stone continued her excellent play by posting another round of 79 and finishing with a score of 158, +14. Stone also had the most birdies on the weekend with four. Hannah Berman of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL took home the 2nd place trophy with rounds of 85 and 81. Taking home the 3rd place honors was Kayla Smith of Middleburg, FL with a weekend score of 172.
Alex Hu of Lake Mary, FL was the sole player under par for the weekend in all divisions. On the first day, Hu shot an eagle on hole 9, a par 5. His impressive mark of 143, -1, crowned him champion of Boys 11-14 division. Hu also finished nine strokes ahead of his competition field. Finishing in 2nd place was Cody Carroll of Jacksonville, FL with scores of 77 and 75. Drew Weary of Blufton, SC was awarded third place. Additionally, after shooting 85 in the first round and an even par 72 in the second round Drew was crowned the most improved player at the tournament. Hu and Weary also tied for most birdies in their division with five.
The first round for Girls age 11-14 division was also cut short by inclement weather. Amelia Root of Jacksonville, FL was crowned the champion for the Girls 11-14 division after posting a weekend score of 153, +9. Root finished eleven strokes ahead of Haley Danford of Longwood, FL. Root also finished the weekend with the most birdies at five. Danford took the 2nd place trophy with a respectable score of 164, +20. Keagan Dunn of Buford, GA tied for 3rd place with Tiara Carter of Lake City, FL. Both girls posted a weekend score of 172. Weather: Day 1- Mid 70’s, mostly cloudy in the morning. Afternoon thunderstorms Day 2- 63 degrees, sunny and windy.
