Amelia Island Junior Challenge at Amelia River Golf Club

(November 12-13, 2016)

                On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour arrived in Amelia Island, FL to host the Amelia Island Junior Challenge, which took place at the beautiful Amelia River Golf Club. 46 players showed up to compete against not only each other and the golf course but also the very windy conditions the area experienced over the weekend. Players, parents, and staff battled the wind all weekend long that accompanied their two days of competitive junior golf.   Boys 16-18 Division

14 young men of the 16-18 division teed it up this weekend in tough windy conditions, and at the end of the day on Sunday, Mark Laken of Kenosha, WI was our champion at Amelia River Golf Club after shooting a 9-over 77-76 (153).  He narrowly defeated his good friends, runner-up Jeremy Sisson of Skaneateles, NY, who shot 79-76 (155), and 3rd place finisher Erik MacDonald of Braintree, MA, who shot 78-78 (156).  These 3 young men are all members of the JPGA so they showed some great camaraderie all weekend long as they were battling for the championship.   Boys 14-15 Division

Amelia River Golf Club played host to the 13 competitors making up the Boys 14-15 division this weekend. Matthew Soucinek of nearby Lake City, FL took down his division this weekend with a consistent 6-over 75-75 (150).  Dan Byrne of Cork, Ireland came back on Sunday with a 1-under 71 to finish in 2nd place with a total of 153 (82-71), 3 strokes behind our winner.  Jay Spivey of Macon, GA shot a 2-day total of 156 (82-74) to finish in 3rd.  Impressively, this tournament was Soucinek’s 3rd win in a row on the HJGT, and 6th win overall in 2016.  He stated he was really enjoying his time playing with our tour and is looking forward to playing in the Hurricane Cup coming up soon.  Girls 14-18 Division

The ladies of the 14-18 division impressed members of Amelia River Golf Club with their ability to navigate the tough course and conditions. 11 girls in total teed it up this weekend with aspirations of being named the champion. Our champion this weekend was Hanna Kiefer of Kronberg, Germany.  She shot a final round 72 to finish with a 2-day total of 152 (80-72).  This gave her a huge 9 stroke victory.  Kiefer really turned it on to win today, closing out her day with a 2-under 34 on the back 9.  She stated her iron play was really on today which helped her claim the championship.  Josie Arant of St. Simon’s Island, GA rebounded from her 90 on Saturday with a 71 on Sunday to finish in 2nd, 9 strokes behind Kiefer, with a 2-day total of 161.  In 3rd place was Grace Jones of Hayesville, NC, who shot a 163 this weekend.     Boys 11-13 Division

Five competitors faced off to take home bragging rights along with a shiny trophy this weekend at Amelia River Golf Club.  Our champion this week in the Boys 11-13 division was hometown kid Clay Tucker of Jacksonville, FL.  Tucker fired a solid 73-74 for a 2-day score of a 3-over 147.  He defeated Brody Stevenson of Saint Augustine, FL, who shot a 155, and Andrew McLauchlan of Neptune Beach, FL, who fired a 158.  Tucker played really great consistent golf to win this weekend, having never shot higher than a 38 on any of the four 9s he played and recording only 6 bogeys all weekend.     Girls 13U Division

There were only but 3 competitors this weekend in the Girls U13 division at Amelia River Golf Club, but all 3 showed great camaraderie all weekend long as they battled each other for two days.  In the end, McKenzie Mages of Marietta, GA was our Girls U13 winner this weekend with a score of 173 (84-89).  She won by 7 strokes, defeating Reagan Southerland of Atlanta, GA, whose total was 180 (89-91), and Marie Tesiero of St. Johns, FL, who finished with a total of 229 (120-109).  Mages told us that she’s been working a lot on her chipping and putting and that she used those skills consistently to win this weekend.    Weather: November 12-13, 2016:
