In the April 2016 edition of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Alumni Spotlight, we are proud to feature University of South Florida junior, Rigel Fernandes! Fernandes has been a starter for three years at USF, and has a sparkling amateur résumé to boot. Fernandez earned medalist honors at the 2014 US Public Links Amateur qualifier in Connecticut, as well as at the 2014 US Amateur qualifier in Michigan. Rigel Fernandes, a current junior at USF, has seven HJGT victories, and two collegiately[/caption] As a Bull, Fernandes earned co-medalist honors at the Irish Creek Collegiate in April 2015 and solo medalist honors at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in February 2016. Along with his two top finishes, Fernandes owns nine total top-10s and has only placed outside of the top-40 twice in 30 starts. Fernandes has found the top 25 19 times. In the rankings as of April 15, the Bangalore, India, native checks in at No. 125 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), and is the second-ranked Indian amateur in the world. The 19-year-old is also No. 123 and No. 128 in the Golfstat and Golfweek NCAA individual rankings, respectively, for the 2015-2016 season. Before his dazzling collegiate career that has helped the Bulls to two NCAA regional and one NCAA finals appearances in two seasons, Fernandes was making his mark on the HJGT. In four years on tour, Fernandes won a remarkable seven times and placed in the top five in all 11 starts. He also found the top five in the HJGT Player of the Year Race in 2011 and 2012, taking fifth both times. His high finishes in the standings were a product of a stellar 72.7 stroke average and 93 total birdies and three eagles to his name. We wish the best of luck to Rigel on his career at USF and beyond!
