Zediker Avoids 4-Man Playoff in One Stroke Victory
Needham Wins With Playoff Birdie
Villa Rica, GA (March 3, 2013) - The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Georgia this past weekend for the first event of the Nike Cup Series. The event was hosted by the Canongate Club at Mirror Lake in Villa Rica, GA. The Nike Cup Series is a newly found partnership with Canongate in which players play for points towards typical year end HJGT honors as well as the Nike Cup Series itself. The weather did not cooperate with the weekend’s exciting event. Temperatures barely climbed into the 40s both days and snow flurries were seen as well. A lot was at stake for the participants in this event. The winners of both the boy’s and girl’s 15-18 age divisions received GA Big I Qualifier exemptions and four performance stars for the AJGA which also provide an exemption into one of their events. Winners in all four divisions received an automatic ticket into the 2013 Tour Championship and a free pair of Kikkor Shoes. Top ten finishers received points towards year end honors including All-HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. Finally South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points and Tarheel Youth Golf Association points were earned.
The boy’s 15-18 age division was close throughout the two day event with Zach Zediker of Gray, GA pulling out the victory by one stroke. Zediker finished at 10 over par in the two day event with three of his competitors finishing at 11 over par. Zediker did his best work on par fours where he finished with the 2nd best average at 4.30. The three competitors who finished tied for second were Barrett Waters, Michael Sheahan, and Brett Ammons. Waters and Ammons finished in second and third in birdies with five and four respectively. Sheahan did a great job of racking up the pars over the two days finishing with a tournament leading 23.
The girl’s 15-18 age division was the most exciting division of the weekend with two girls tying for first place after 36 holes. Sydney Needham and Sabrina Long both finished at 17 over par leading to a one hole playoff in which Needham pulled off the victory with a birdie. Needham finished with the most pars in the tournament with 20 and had the best par three performance with a 2.88 average. Long had the most birdies in the division finishing with four for the tournament. Janet Mao finished two strokes back of Needham and Long for the third place trophy. Mao had the second most pars for the weekend and finished with the best par four performance.
Jake Bayer won the boy’s 15-18 age division in impressive fashion shooting six over par for the tournament to win by six strokes. Bayer had the best average scores on par threes, fours, and fives and led his division in pars. Bayer was also second in birdies with four. Will Rawlings and Bruce Smith tied for second place after shooting 12 over par for the tournament. Both were consistent over the two days with Rawlins shooting a 76-80 and Smith shooting a 77-79. Smith did his damage on par fives where he had a 4.88 tournament for the tournament. Rawlings showed his consistency by posting the second best par or better percentage.
The girl’s 11-14 age division was won by Marietta, GA native Marisa Mukherjee. Mukherjee bested her opponents by an overall nine strokes shooting a consistent 89-91. Mukherjje led in almost every major statistical category including most birdies and most pars. Grace Choi finished in second place and Jayla Mcrae took home third place. Choi had the fourth most pars for the tournament finishing with five. Mcrae was impressive on par fours where she had the third best average for the tournament.
